I really enjoyed this book. My only quibble is that I'd have preferred more pictures. A pet peeve of mine is reading a description of a room or a detail in a room and there's no picture of what's being described. If it's interesting/significant enough to cover in the text why no picture? But other than that, I loved the homes included in this book. The women were fascinating people.

Ms. Hiller is a superlative writer and this book is a wonderful gem. It transcends genres and portrays the transformative powers of 18 women in creating unique personal spaces to grow and share their creative lives. It explores the unique relationship that women have with their homes as symbolic, metaphorical and literal centers of their livelihood. The images by Kendall Reeves are beautiful. The centerpiece of this work is a guide to how the inspired become designers of their lives and how each and every aspect of that creation becomes a work of heart. It acknowledges that life can beset by incredible challenges, but renovation and healing are an intricate and connected spiritual means as well as a goal. Beyond these personal tales is a first class guide to design with insight on how to create efficient, innovative, and expressive spaces to soothe the soul. A+

This is a practical guide to speaking commonly understood Arabic as the average Man on the street uses the language.The book is a dictionary of English terms with the corresponding Arabic phrases detailed in phonetic detail.A couple of caveats ... There are a couple small sections on grammar, but you're not going to master Arabic diction. Many verbs are irregular, and you are just as likely to sound silly as to sound erudite if you apply the general rules.Also, Egypt and Syria are considered by many to be the centers of modern, spoken Arabic. You'll be understood in other parts of the Arabic speaking world if you use this dictionary, but you won't be speaking the local dialect. There are at least five different variations on ballpoint pen that I've run across in practice.All in all, this is a very good, pocket sized guide.

Looked for a long time for an egyptian arabic - english dictionary. This one is good and has a well chosen selection of words, but no arabic script. For translating signs and shop notices, and to show an egyptian who didn't speak english and couldn't get my pronounciation. With the arabic script too it would be perfect. I took the Pimsleur egyptian arabic audio course, which was fantastic, and with this book for extra vocabulary made myself understood all over Egypt - not much choice on the market (at a reasonable price) for this type of book - so I will probably spend the time to put the arabic in myself for next time.

I got this book from a friend while I was in Egypt visiting. I realized that even with the phonetic spelling of the Arabic equivalent, you may still mispronounce the words and get strange looks if the person(s) you are speaking to knows the same amount of English as you know of Arabic. You still need the Arabic written so you can show someone when the pronunciation is not working.

I had this in my back pocket for years and carried it where ever i went when I lived in Cairo. It was a really handy reference guide as I learned Arabic.

It's nearly impossible to find a good dictionary of actual spoken Arabic but this fits the bill. It has many of the words you want to know but hardly ever use like "screw driver" and "fumigation". You won't find those in a travel dictionary, and God only knows what archaic words the MSA dictionary will have.I'm disappointed that the actual Arabic spelling of the actual words was not included. Also, as is somewhat common among transliterated dictionaries, Greek characters are used for the letters which do not exist in English. I am at a complete loss as to why Greek characters are somehow more understandable than the actual letter from the language that I'm learning. I'm learning Arabic, not Greek. Also the Greek letters they chose are of course different than the Greek letters chosen by other authors, which only increases my confusion. The transliteration key does not even include the Arabic characters, leaving me to guess what letter "similar to the 'ch' in German 'doch'" refers to. I also don't speak German. I would think anyone who would find this dictionary useful would also have at least an elementary grasp on what sounds Arabic letters make, and if not it seems using the Arabic letters would help force them down that path a bit better than Greek letters.

It complemented my 30 disc Pimsleur Egyptian Arabic language course, especially for use in hotel and restaurants. Pocket size especially appreciated.

I think this is the only English-Egyptian Arabic dictionary with significant availability. So it's also the best!There's a lot that would make it a good dictionary even if it weren't unique: It's got just shy of 7,000 words, which means that it gives you the lexicon you need to say most anything, even if you can't find the specific English word you'd like to use. For nouns & adjectives, it gives the plural form, even when that form is regular; for verbs, it gives both the perfect (ماضى) & the imperfect (مضارع) forms. The transliteration distinguishes between the hamza glottal stop & the qāf glottal stop, which means that it can be used fairly easily to transition to Upper Egyptian Arabic (which, unlike Cairene Arabic, regularly distinguishes between the pronunciations of the two letters), & will make Egyptian colloquial words more familiar to those who know formal Arabic or another dialect. The transliteration is pretty easy to pick up, & a quick guide is conveniently placed on the inside cover. There are very good grammatical tables at the back of the book. The book fits nicely in a back jeans pocket, making it as convenient as any phrase book, but far more comprehensive.But there are also some problems: While 6,800 words is a great learner's vocabulary, there are a surprising number of useful terms that can't be found in the book. I'm sure that the authors must have done some consultation of English word frequency lists, but it would be nice if a third edition included words like 'murder' or 'ethnicity' or 'reject' that are all among the 5,000 most common words in English. The grammatical notes on the words are useful, but incomplete: Most problematically, the verb entries don't include the verbal noun, or maṣdar (مصدر). Maṣdars are not fully predictable, & thus need to be part of an entry. I recognise that the dictionary needed a Romanisation scheme, as Arabic doesn't offer adequately complex vowel diacritics for the Egyptian colloquial, but it would be useful for the learner who's working with both speech & writing to see the spelling of the Arabic words.Beyond these issues—which I think are actually shortcomings of the dictionary—there are a few fantasy qualities that I would love to see in such a dictionary: First, I wish there were example sentences, to see the Arabic terms in context. If you're given two lexemes under an English entry, how do you know the difference? Example sentences would probably more than double the size of the dictionary, & it might become less of a pocket tool. I can understand why this doesn't happen. Second, I wish there were some indication of register. Again, for the individual who is learning both colloquial & formal Arabic, it's useful to know when a word is common to the two, & when it sounds too colloquial for writing. This is a very important learner's need.

Nice tactical puzzle book. This book is a great book for anyone looking to get out of the 1200-1400 USCF level. I have many chess book and puzzles book and many of them are based on GM games. Which is nice, but coffee house chess where many are not GM dont make perfect moves and leave a lot of tactical possibilities if you can spot them. This book is based on weaker opponent games so there are tactical abilities in them that more likely to come up in your games if you play a lot of coffee shop chess. This book wont make you a GM or a 2000 rated player but can help you get to 1800 on a consistent level. What works well with this book is to go through it, it start off easy and the gets harder. Find the pages where you are finding them get difficult and mark that page. From that point on study about 300 and go back and do them again. Do them until you can solve the puzzles all 300 in half an hour. Repition is key once you do that then do another 300 and repeat. If you are stuck in the 1200-1400 level you will start to notice an improvement fast and you will spot them in your own games fast. Great book

I recently discovered another chess book, which may, in the end, prove one of the most beneficial in my Kindle chess library.It’s called “Progressive Tactics: 1002 Progressively Challenging Chess Tactics” by Dave Couture. The concept behind the book is simple but effective: Couture presents a series of chess problems of increasing complexity and difficulty for readers to study and analyze. On one page, the problem appears in a chess diagram with a simple instruction like: “White [or Black] to move,” with no other explanation. On the page following each problem, readers will find a diagram showing the best solution to the problem. There’s an arrow on the diagram showing the move, and a brief, easy-to-understand explanation for the move and why it is best.In his introduction, Dave Couture recommends using the book for about 15 to 20 minutes per day for a couple of months. He believes that readers who do this will begin to see an improvement in their overall chess playing skills automatically, “without making any special effort in… [their] games.” I’ve tried Couture’s suggestion, and it seems to work. In the same way Couture saw his chess Elo rating improve by about 10 percent from studying tactics, I have also seen my Elo rating increase by a similar amount (from about 1200) because of using his book.“Progressive Tactics” ranks among the better-formatted Kindle chess books I’ve found. The layout is simple. The diagrams are clear and colorful; however, they are a bit undersized for my 60-plus year-old eyes. This is a minor complaint that I hope Couture will address in future editions. Increasing the size of the diagrams – by even a moderate amount – in Kindle editions would be a great benefit to readers (like me) with less than perfect vision.I think “Progressive Tactics” is one of the best, most useful “Kindle-ized” chess books I’ve found in a long time. Highly recommended. (4½ Stars ^ 5)

I bought the Kindle edition. The formatting for this book is great. A diagram on one page, followed by the diagram showing the solution on the next page.The diagrams look great on my iPad.I hope that other chess books will use this as a pattern for their Kindle editions.I have only done a few of the puzzles so far. They are taken from real games and seem practical.The price is great.

I really like this book with one caveat. It has the same flaw that all such books have. You know that there is a tactic in the position. This is different from a chess game. There you don't get forewarned that a tactic is lurking in the position.But as a book to use for warming up and learning chess tactics this book is excellent. It is on the same level as Tim Brennan's stuff and as such should help improve your chess.I think the idea of going over the puzzles several times is very applicable to this type of book.

A collection of chess puzzles selected from the author's own games. They progress from trivial to very hard, which is useful for assessing your level of tactical ability as well as providing at least a few hundred puzzles for any level player between about 800 and 1500 rating. The feature that I liked the most was that the objective in each puzzle is not stated, rather left as part of the problem as it would be in an actual game. Most mid-level players may find this feature eye-opening as we often forget to search for tactics in a position. The book is well-edited but I found the commentary to be a bit thin at times.

This is one of the best chess ebooks I have bought. I love the nice big board images and that you touch the screen once for the answer and explanation - as opposed to many other chess ebooks where you have to skip to the last chapter to find the answer, which is very annoying and unwieldy, and in doing so you can't help seeing the answer to the next problem! Highly recommend this one.

But I love it. Every time I have a spare moment I pop up this book and solve a couple of tactical problems. It is really helping, too. My rating for solving tactical problems on Lichess has jumped to over 2000.

This is a great book for learning tactics. In addition to a well-graded set of problems from real games, the format is well thought out with a single problem or solution to a page on a Kindle device. The diagrams are clear and the solutions are helpful. On the Kindle cloud app the problem-per-page layout is bit broken, but this is the fault of the cloud app. A lot of the time I find this book much more convenient than online tactics training (ChessTempo) or one of the large paperbacks such as Polgar's Chess Tactics for Champions.

This is one of my favorite stories, because of Sebastian, who I loved. Kaderin the heroine is sent to kill him . Sebastian is ready to die as he is lonely and tired of being a vampire, which he never asked for or wanted to be. Then he discovers that she is his bride he will do anything to make her his. Kaderin realizes that she is his bride as well but flees from him. Vampires are her greatest enemy for many reasons including they killed her sisters. Kaderin competes in a yearly contest with prize being something that she wants more than anything else in the world. Sebastian participates for and with her, even though she still wants nothing to do with him.Sebastian was great. He immediately falls in love with his bride and for a man who has always been shy and timid around women, lets his alpha come out, which I enjoyed reading about. I really liked that he was not a manhoe. He had only two sexual experiences before Kederin and they were very brief and terrible. Kaderin had her emotions stolen from her for years feels because of him and Sebastian comes alive. The two get their desire back at the same time when they met and the chemistry between the two is sizzling. The sex scenes and even the make out scenes are hot. I loved most of the books in this series but this was my favorite, because of Sebastian.

This is probably one of the best academic books of all time. The area of Hebrew beliefs is not really tackled by even the most hardcore of Mesopotamian scholars. I always recommend this book to people who study Hebrew, Canaanite, and Mesopotamian beliefs as well as the people interested in goddess worship of the Ancient Near East and even those who are very critical of Judaism or Christianity. The book covers a plethora of goddesses and even has a chapter on the demon Lilith, with really good references to the demon Naamah and Tubal Cain. So its a plus for Jewish feminists and Goddess worshipers whom concern themselves with the modern image of Lilith.Patai is very excellent translator of the Hebrew language and his notes in other Hebrew translations (Such as his translations of the Zohar) are worth looking into to explain the translation for the lay people who know little Hebrew. There is a lot that the English language fails to grasp concerning translating Hebrew.I only have a few problems with it. For example, some of his more controversial assertions don't hold up to modern scholarship where archeology is concerned. The Burney relief is thought with great academic consensus to be Ishtar rather than Lilith. Jacobsen, a very renown Mesopotamian scholar, suggested this was a form of Ishtar in her Ninna (Lady Owl) form. Patai uses Kramer, whom makes great translations from Sumerian, but is outdated concerning that archeology bit and some theories. However, Patai does cite Jacobsen several times over on other things. He seemed to cite Jacobsen more than Kramer... Well, this is a minor problem, really.The other thing, which is also is very minor, is that the book isn't written so flowingly sometimes. It seems to just kind of go dry. You may find yourself not really paying attention. But this is something that is so overshadowed by the fact that the book contains eye opening and jaw dropping information about Yahweh. I found the book, overall, to be written in such a understandable way that no lay person should have problems understanding it.All and all this is my favorite book on ancient Hebrew beliefs, and though its been along time since it was written, I highly recommend it for anybody interested in Hebrew and Jewish myths, as well as Israelite worship and the concept of God.

The admirably precise scholarship of this early delve into questions few previously attempted to answer leaves an assiduous reader with an otherwise unattainable understanding -and a reward of further, unanswered questions. And, this text is, in itself, historically significant.

First off, I read this book with a bias. I designed the Asherah tattoo I proudly display on my chest. Anathema for a Jewish girl, but there's an important reason for it. The concept of a holy bride was not new to me when I picked this up.We all need to know where we come from, and it can be argued that descendants of the Jewish tribe take that more seriously than most. It's reflected in our holidays and in our fasts. But while we celebrate Moshe, the Maccabees, and Ben Gurion, there's not much acknowledgment of our heroines, save for Queen Esther.It seems to me to be a cover up; a whitewashing of where not just the Tribe, but Judaism as a whole came from, and our origin specifically is a paganistic religious group that was scattered all throughout the Arabian peninsula and Northeast Africa many thousands of years ago -- indeed, just like the Heathens to the North.At one point, YHWH had a wife, and she was arguably the object of more devotions than He was. While the concept of YHWH was still under development, the female ideal of a perfect mother and beautiful bride was full in swing; every ancestral/household god had one, or even multiple. So much so, in fact, that we still refer to Shabbat as a beautiful bride and we mourn her departure at Havdalah.This is important knowledge for not just Semitic pagans like myself, but for all Jews -- and Christians and Muslims -- to hold dear.

Very much enjoyed this book. I was pleasantly surprised to find support for the concept that God the Father has a wife. The idea of the Cherubim being in human form - male and female - was another impressive item. While not supported directly, Cherubim in the form of man and women appears to support the idea of God having a wife. This along with Dever's work with Asherah and Margaret Barker's work with the Queen of Heaven and how Josiah had Her (And the Tree of Life) removed from the temple in the 6th century is a fascinating concept. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book in order to research Lilith and I discovered a wealth of information beyond my original quest. "The Hebrew Goddess" is well written, informative, and easy to understand. I recommend this to college professors who need to teach undergrad level courses because the material will not be over their head. I also recommend the book to anyone who is interested in Judeo-Christian Lore.

good resource book

Great book on information about Lilith. It came quickly and in really good condition. I found it well worth my time and money

Since I am researching the Goddess concept for a book that I'm writing this has been a very good research tool for me.
