Not everything is in here that I believe a newbie should know. But there is a lot and this will help you to get started. I've used Linux since the 80's and am a die hard fan of the best OS for all users. There is nothing like seeing your screen turn blue because your first program crashed your system bad. And then spending nite and day learning, to in the end seeing everything work again because you are a Super User. You do really feel like that until everything crashes and burns again. Well enjoy this book and I suggest learning some Python or Perl so you have a fighting chance. Linux distributions tend to never work perfect out of the box. I'm hacking my WiFi hardware now on a new Debian install on an older system. So good luck out there and keep your sock dry.
This book is a fine example of the sort of writing that makes users hate computer manuals. It is not clear to me that the author's native language is English. There are many awkward usages throughout. There is no overview of the language, nor is there any explanation of where you might get a copy of the OS or which version you might want to try or why. A waste of time and paper. The best part of the book is the cute cover illustration.
I got this book for my son, and he said is was very helpful. I looked at it and found each of the sections easy to understand. I am not that literate in computers but was grasp many of the ideas in this book. I loved the pictures and examples that helped me to figure out what I was reading. This was a great beginners guide.
This book is a waste of time and paper for both the reader and the writer. The author is obviously a network administrator who has been using Linux for several years. The first quarter of the book gives a brief history of Linux. All well and good except if I want that information I'll go to Wikipedia. The latter half of the book deals with network setups that no beginner should ever be presented with. There are a few pages where the author skims over the most important things to a beginner: OS selection/installation, manual navigation, program installation. He does not go into enough detail however to actually be useful. It's more like "this is how things look when they are going right" instead of "this is how you do things so that they turn out right."All the while, the grammar and spelling mistakes are DISTRACTINGLY bad. I'm not an English major and I can accept a few mistakes here and there, but this book consistently hits five and six mistakes per page!
I could have saved the $12 and got more information from YouTube for free. This is an extremely high-level overview of Linux without many examples nor screenshots. I don't know how anything 67 pages long can be considered "The Ultimate..." anything. I am as much of a beginner to Linux as anyone and I do not feel like I got anything useful other than a general overview of Linux from the few hours it took to read this book.
I’ve been using Windows on all of my computers and occasionally I’ve used Macs in the past, but I have never really known much about Linux. Wanting to expand my technical horizons a little bit, I picked up this book. A friend recommended this book to me as a quick way to get started with learning more about the system, and I’m impressed. The book did a great job of breaking things down for beginners like me, and I found it really interesting to boot. Because of this book I’m confident that I can do great things with Linux, and am glad it was recommended to me.
I found little value in this book as a learning tool. I have many years of programming experience and I have read many computer books over the years. Perhaps that is why I found so little value in this book. Someone who has never worked on a computer before might gain a little knowledge from this book but I can't imagine such a person starting out on a Linux system instead of Windows or Apple systems. My advice is save you money and buy a real beginner's book.
Those who don’t know or little about Linus can have this book. The creators of Ubuntu came up with around ten to twenty different server installation packages that you could choose from. And what happens is if you run the tasksel command, you will get a DOS screen where all of these server installation packages are listed. If you want to make your server an email server for example, all you need to do is select Email server and then it will install all the necessary software you need for that particular server type.
