This is an excellent book! It explains many things I've noticed but didn't comprehend well in FreeBSD and Linux. The authors are very gifted at communicating, a rare gift concerning tech book and online doc authors (generally, such works so dull, they may merely serve (too often) as ambiguous reference material). The authors also give some interesting history about FreeBSD and its competitors; they give a very compelling case for the OS, which was first being developed in the era of the first moon landing and in the heart of the cold war.The authors give the steps for setting up the GUI, and many options for this (this is bedeviling for many of us--a default GUI doesn't "pop-up" after install as in commercially-supported Linux, Windows, and the Mac OS--one "builds" the GUI from a low level with desired features), and, also, the authors explain the reasons for having to set up the GUI (the OS is favored by server users who prefer a lean command-line interface).The bewildering VI editor is thoughtfully explained in some detail as well: It is a high-powered, yet, heavily keyboard-command dependent (and user-unfriendly) text editor that often is necessary for system configuration and software development. It's not user friendly (or "intuitive") because it was developed in the aforementioned cold-war era of really limited computer power and storage: Needless to say, it hasn't changed much....The book, which I haven't yet finished but am eagerly reading daily, gives many caveats (such as configuring the sync settings of monitors correctly). FreeBSD is not a good OS for a PC newbie to learn to use (at least not without a knowledgeable mentor); nevertheless, I think this is a very good intro book for gamers and high-level techies--these may wish to use FreeBSD in advanced ways such as for servers, developing firewalls, as well as for common internet/e-mail and other networking tasks (such tasks are inherently more secure and speedy on FreeBSD)--or for those well-exposed to Linux, or Apple OSX--cousin-OSes or, in the latter case, a direct descendant....

As a FreeBSD enthusiast I could say that everything is on the handbook, but I'd be a liar. Everything about FreeBSD is on FreeBSD.For all those who have heard about FreeBSD and desire to start from scratch (i.e. moving from Windows), you'll need all the help you can get: you'll have to look for the Complete FreeBSD book, the Handbook (printed or online) and will be surfing the FreeBSD man pages after the instalation... and then you'll have to use your own creativity imagination and all the internet search engines available to understand and implement this beautiful OS. But the results are excellent, the stability and security that FreeBSD offers are outstanding.FreeBSD Unleashed is certainly a book which has many updated information and shares many common points with the books mentioned above, however, all of them complement each other. I certainly recommend this book for everyone who needs a good reference book for FreeBSD and already owns the others mentioned.Good Luck!

Great product, good price!

I preorder this book, and waited by 2 months until it was published, but FreeBSD 6 really was a good choice. It is well wrote, but for my is necessary a better chapter reference, because I used it like a reference book and some time I need to look in the entire book to find a specific topic.

This book isn't for me.You would think a FreeBSD book in 2006 will tell you things like how to keep your system safe with binary updates, or walk you through a decent CUPS installation, or mention using OpenBSD's firewall tool. It's just the same-old same-old. There's little here that can't be learned from the Handbook or Greg Lehey's The Complete FreeBSD. And both are free. To be fair, there is new stuff here, like installing the official Sun JDK port for FreeBSD, or using portupgrade, but I expected a little more thoroughness and variation in choices in the areas of security, ports and printing. Also, I think a chapter about contributing to the FreeBSD ports tree would have been good to have.However, if you're new to Unix/FreeBSD, than I think you will enjoy the chatty style instead of the rather more terse style of The Handbook.

I have been teaching private voice lessons for several decades, but Ms. Boytim finally wrote down all the information I've used for years in one accessible book. It gives all the information on every aspect of the business that any new or experienced teacher can need, not just musically but also copyright, business and tax aspects. The solfeggio/eartraining pages in the back of the book are exceptional tools for every student, and Ms. B. allows each teacher to make copies for the students to study. The only objection I have to this publication: it is issued with the so-called 'perfect' binding, which is impossible to keep open on the piano without breaking the back and losing pages. A local print shop was able to put a coil binding in it for a couple of bucks, but I would have been happy to spend the extra for a spiral binding from the publisher. Except for that, is is a wonderful resource that I use with all my students.

Joan Frey Boytim does an incredibly thorough job in preparing this book for the private voice teacher. I just recently graduated from my undergrad in music and I want to start my own private voice studio. Having never taken any music business classes in college, I needed a book to teach me the basics and how to gather everything together to start a successful studio. This book did the trick! There are sections in this book to cover essentially every part of starting your own private voice studio. I highly recommend this book!

I will keep this short since there are plenty of wordy reviews already. This book is worth it. It is great especially for beginner voice teachers. Also, if you are looking to improve your business or give your studio a make over, this is the book for you. It has real-life examples of letters, flyers, warm-up samples, and tips on recruiting your studio members. It is easy to understand. It is perfectly organized and interesting to read. It will not disappoint you. Give it a try. :)

This is one of the best books for anyone starting to teach voice. It has so much practical information about how to run a business and how to handle students and clients. Even has sight reading and warm ups. Great!

What a deal! You get everything you need to know about starting the business (including what tax forms to submit) to beginner vocal exercises for your students. What's not to love? I've taught voice on and off for 10 years and I can tell you that had I gotten my hands on this book in the beginning of my efforts, I would not have run into so many questions and problems. This book is priced so affordably too! Highly recommended for those starting a business to those who want to streamline their efforts.

This is one of the most helpful educational books I have ever read. This is a must-have for any voice teacher, whether just starting out or a veteran of teaching. Written as though in reply to letters from a recent college graduate starting a voice studio, this book covers such topics as vocal techniques, how to select literature, competitions and auditions, organization or your studio, and even includes vocal warm-ups and solfege syllables to use as sight-reading exercises. (Also, I was able to find the Concone method, which she recommends, for free on imslp.org.) This is the same author who wrote the "First Book of Soprano Solos" et. al. that most of us used in college or high school. I definitely recommend this book, it's a real life saver!

I've been a music teacher for many years but I still learned a lot of great ideas from this book. I highly recommend it for all private music or vocal teachers.

Having spent more money than i care to recall on therapy and self-help books that didn't help, i can't tell you how exquisitely and how painlessly significant this book has become for me! I first read it in the early 80's and to this day refuse to spend a single night without it somewhere within arm's length. It is the best source of wisdom and guidance i have ever known. I have gifted many troubled friends with copies of this book, not because i grew tired of the middle of the night phone calls begging for answers to their most recent frightful dreams, but because i knew they would benefit from learning their own unique and personal dream symbols. It is especially adept at giving children an extremely efficient tool for dealing with their nightmares! Ask anyone who knows me- they will tell you how profoundly this book has changed my life (and my friends lives!) for the better!

I have literally had the first edition of this book since 1984 or so and I loved it from the beginning. I have consulted it hundreds of times over the years and have shared with friends. Then I saw that there was a new edition and I promptly ordered it. There are many new symbols in this new edition, which is fabulous! What I like about this book is that symbols are interpreted in a more spiritual context. It’s easy to read and a very helpful tool in interpreting dreams. If you are interested in what your dreams mean, you won’t be disappointed with this amazing book.

I knew the author. Her book is the most accurate Dream reference I know of.. I had a much older copy worn and in terrible shape,  but what a book... Betty's is as authentic and it sells beyond her passing over. It is very well received and I recommend it highly.

This is THE book to use as a guide for interpreting your dreams - I have found it absolutely invaluable. For the first couple of years after my wife died, I was immersed in dreams, often waking up several times during the night, writing feverishly in my dream notebook and the next morning I would use this book to help me get into my own interpretation of what the dream was trying to tell me.We all dream and we all need to dream (avoid drugs that interfere with dreaming - will serve to drive you even more insane than we already are) and even if we don't remember them, they are vital to healthy living. If you are interested in gaining consciousness, then telling yourself to remember them, keeping a notebook and pen next to your bed, writing them down with the lights still off, then using this book to help with your interpretation will make a huge difference in your life.

This was my 'go to' reference book many years ago when I used to have amazingly vivid dreams....and before the internet was easily accessible. Now that I'm starting to dream again, and after endless searching for interpretations over the internet, I find myself reverting back to this little book. I find it's a great guide that easily (and accurately) translates dream symbols, and the information at the start of the book about dreaming, was all that I needed to help me back on the right path to interpret my dreams.

I have ordered and read hundreds of books on spirituality, energy, healing, dreams, self awareness, and earth energies, just to name a few topics. I have only three books that have changed the way of life for me and this is one of them. I have it on my bedside every single night and do not travel without it, although, I have memorized a lot of it's contents by reading so many times. I have given it as a gift so many times I last ordered ten of them, because I am always giving mine away to an interested friend.I have several dream books, this is by far the most concise, and easy to follow as well as always having the symbols I am looking for. It also rings "true" in my soul. We all know when we read a truth or a non- truth, it just feels different, and I know Betty wrote an accurate and so helpful book. I would love to meat her one day to say thank you for an understanding of a part of my life that has become so important. I have learned so much from my dreams as well as helped many others with their dreams, which are usually highly symbolic due to their reoccurrence. I would not buy one of these books, I would buy 5 and give the others to anyone in your life that needs insight to another dimension of their soul.

I have had the original version of this book for years and have studied dream interpretation as well. This book is the real deal. I remember going to a book store and going though various books on dream interpretation and the dream symbols all said something different and did not resonate with my life at all. I likened them to fortune cookies or the horoscopes you get in the newspaper. I use Betty's book all the time and have learned much from it. It has absolutely helped me figure out why things are happening in my waking life. The symbols in this new edition are a welcome addition as well.

The Dream Book: Symbols for Self Understanding, is one of the best dream symbol books on the market and the only one I use.When I compare it to the others, I am very surprised by how frequently they introduce a tone of Freudian analysis with its proclivity for seeing things through a narrow lenses. In the Dream Book, Betty Bethards uses a wide lenses view, and defines the meaning of symbols. She notes the symbols can be interpreted in a variety of ways, and she emphasizes the importance of the dreamer's interpretation.I find the book to be well laid out and used easily as a reference source. I love the Kindle version which I can search using the find function on my computer.

I admit I am biased as I grew up sailing the waters of Gloucester, Salem and Beverly and recall how terrifying the Blizzard of 78 was even while tucked safely away in a suburban house. I remember seeing the Can Do on her runs out to freighters, but never knew the full story of her amazing and heroic crew.This book does a great job filling in the backstory of not only the Can Do’s crew but also the equally heroic men of the USCG. Yes, there are some odd sidebar stories which some may consider filler, but they all provide additional context of the players in this real-life tragedy.A very quick read and I am purchasing additional copies for my sailing friends and family.

Captivating and heartbreaking at the same time. Like reading about the Titanic, you know unfortunately how it's going to end, but it's the way that Mr. Tougias weaves the story with his unique style of informative anecdotes, parallel narratives and historical tales that makes it incredibly hard to put down. When the end finally does come, you feel like you've lost someone as Mr. Tougias does an incredible job of detailing who these heroes actually were, and why they did what they did. I live in Scituate, MA, right down the street from where one of the tragedies of that storm took place, that Mr. Tougias writes about in this book, so the story itself hits very close to home and gives me a new respect for the power and beauty of the nor'easter storms we get in New England. I've suggested the book to a few friends who've said the exact same thing, that it was riveting. I look forward to reading more of the author's work.

I finished this book in tears, with that hellish lump in the throat that no amount of `haruphing' will dislodge. What a great - and needless - tragedy the author, a local journalist, describess here, in a vivid picture of the battle between the storm of 1978, with blizzards of forty inches and pure hurricane strength winds, and in the forty-foot waves are the men who are fighting to save others and all too soon, themselves.The Can Do was a steel-hulled Pilot boat out of Gloucester, that home-port of so many brave and lost seamen, and was named as an expression of attitude of the owner, Frank Quirk who with four mates, volunteers to "take a look" to see if he could help men stranded on a tanker in Salem bay.Conditions were so bad that Coast Guard boats and even cutters were soon in great peril themselves. The tanker was aground, hard set on a ledge and going nowhere - the captain had cried "wolf" in his incompetence and five families lost their men while many of them actually listened to the gradually dying radio transmission from the battered boat.Well written, interspersed with snippets from Gloucester history, a worthy read.

I'm almost done with a recently released book I was given for Christmas, "Ten Hours Until Dawn." I began reading it but two days ago and don't want to put it down! A great read for the winter house-bound mariners up here, or for the most uninitiated landlubber. It's one of, if not the, best sea tales I've ever read.It's the true story of the disasterous "Great Blizzard of '78" here at Ground Zero on the North Shore of Massachusetts, the grounding of the oil tanker Global Hope about two or three miles from us, and the rescue attempt turned disaster in the worst winter storm in over 100 years.Between the herculean and selfless efforts of our local Coast Guard out of Gloucester and pilot boat captain Frank Quirk and his volunteer crew of his Can Do, the nail-biting descriptions of the almost unbelievable conditions out there in my sailing grounds, histories of similar marine crises, and the detailed but easily comprehensible explanations, it's one of those books that keeps you awake after midnight to read "just one more chapter."This story holds a special significance for me not only because I'm so familiar with the locale and sail it every weekend during the season. During that historic storm I was living-aboard an old wooden 46' power boat tied up to our slip on D dock at Beverly Harbor Marina. Conditions got so bad by early evening that a group of us live-aboards got together with all the lines we had among us and we could get our hands on, tied off our dock to pilings and telephone poles and buildings in the parking lot above us. Above us, until the high-tide surge, when our floating dock rose above the hinged ramp, above the stationary wharf thereby stranding us on our boats, above even the sea wall and parking lot. We watched helplessly from our "island" as the rollers swept across the parking lot to our snow-buried cars! Two of the nearby boat-laden docks broke lose! The snow was so deep that if you didn't walk carefully down the very center of the rolling dock in the howling wind, it'd tip and dump you off.Word had passed around in our marina that an oil tanker was aground just outside Beverly Harbor and that a rescue effort was underway. We saw the Coast Guard's 41-footer make it in to the Jubilee Yacht Club just next door. But we didn't learn about the tragedy just a few miles out until a day or two later; we were too busy ourselves that night to think to turn on the VHF radio. This is the first time I've learned the details -- and they were incredible, horrific!I probably knew a few of the Coast Guardsmen quoted throughout who were out there facing death. During the summer of 1977 the Coast Guard used to love "boarding" us. Our boat had become a magnet for some of the ladies of an all-women's college just up the coast, and we four young live-aboards usually had a contingent of them aboard. When off-duty, a few of the Coasties would sometimes come down to the boat for a visit and a few brewskies, hoping we had company aboard.Reading the details of what happened that night is chilling even almost thirty years later. I clearly recall how bad things were that night, but had no idea how much worse they were just a couple miles out in Salem Sound, or the life-and-death drama that was taking place. That *anyone* survived out there is a miracle -- that anyone *went* out there is unimaginable.

BORING!!!!!! The story of the rescue efforts for the tanker is excellent, with details like radio comms etc, but I had to flip page after page, more than 3/4 of the book, to read about too many similar accidents, and about the boring life stories not only of the people involved in this rescue attempt, but of all the people in the area that suffered from the 1978 blizzard.

Being a retired Coast Guardsman and the Enlisted Engineering Officer on the Cape George during the rescue of the Chester Poling referenced in this book I found it very interesting. Just after this SAR case I was transferred to Rockland, Maine to a sea going tug my preference as I was approaching retirement. A neighbor spoke to me regarding this book so I decided to purchase. Some of these people I knew. Mike Paradis Warrant Bos'n was in charge of Glouscester Station and I remember him as we were both stationed in So. Portland, Me together. Jim Loew I clearly remember as my CO and remember the day he reported aboard the Cape George as a young man. I thought they get younger and younger what am I in for. He turned out to be a great CO and was well respected.

Here, he extends those themes even further and posits that AI, correctly applied, will be transformative to healthcare delivery.That is not necessarily a novel prediction. Numerous authors have highlighted the increasing role of machine-learning/AI in healthcare (and more than a few tech companies have hyped it). Topol acknowledges all that enthusiasm, and using a short set of examples hihglight the value of AI in the first chapter itself. The rest of the book is a systematic expansion of where Topol sees the biggest opportunities in AI are - to the extent he calls it the next industrial revolution.Topol does an excellent job in differentiating clinicians as those that work with and without patterns - these two chapters highlighting the complexities and skill set required to master a cognitive, integrative process is perhaps the most interesting part of the book. These highlight the key assumptions AI developers should (and shouldn't) make while designing their systems. The discussions on how health systems are approaching AI and ML is interesting, but a reader familiar with the academic literature may brush it off as old news; however, Topol manages to convey the key insights and implications that can be extrapolated to other applications. He also provides an interesting take on the role of AI in nutrition and mental health and then becomes very generous with imagination in his discussion on virtual medical assistant.Imaginative, informative, and inspiring - but Topol, almost always ignores the question of "who will pay for it" that has dogged the field of mHealth etc for a while. A reader would have benefited from his expanded views on this issue as well. Overall, an excellent read for anyone remotely interested in healthcare or technology and a wonderful thought-starter for any start-up.

To use the analogy of water, some books are like pouring water into your head, drinking it in, other books are like jumping into a body of water and swimming around. "After our Likeness" is the latter.Volf's edited dissertation on eccelsiology is a dense read, as most dissertations are. In it, he attempts to discuss how the Western (and largely American) model of the "Free Church" of congregationalism might gain something from their Eastern and European brethren in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions. The first half of the book is dedicated to exploring the ecclesiological ideas of Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) and Metropolitan bishop John Zizioulas of the Greek Orthodox church. Throughout the discovery of Ratzinger and Zizioulas, we find the writings of John Smyth, a foundational leader in the Baptist tradition, countering and giving a foil to the more episcopal polities of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox.The second half the book is where Volf begins to attempt to synthesize all of these points of view together. There is quite a bit to understand as Volf tries to see a sort of "third way" of ecclesiology through discussions about who comprises the church, what the roles in the church are, what the gifts of the church mean for the function of the church, how faith and the church interact, and the universal or "Body of Christ" nature of the church.Each of these subjects could be a book unto itself, so Volf does an excellent job of sparking an idea, but does not go as far as making specific prescriptions or prophecies for the Church and how it may begin to look more like the Trinity, each person comprising a larger and mysteriously unified whole.I would not recommend this book for the uninitiated. The jargon and sheer amount of Latin in the book make it difficult for someone with a theology degree to fully wrap their minds around it, but for those who can understand such things - I wholeheartedly recommend the book as it gives us a picture of how we might continue to think about the composition of the church as it gathers before the return of Christ.

I have to say that the previous reviews are about as thorough as I could be, so I only want to add a few general cents here about the text.First, his desire to have the Congregationalist/Free Church recognized as legitimate ecumenical partners for dialogue is very welcome. Since they represent one of the fastest growing segments in modern Christianity, it makes sense that they should have a voice. But a common voice would be helpful. Congregationalists are a little like talking to Hydra- who is the voice? Volf offers a defense or vision of his ecclesiology, but in the end I believe it remains just that, "his" defense of "his" ecclesiology. In my own dialogue with "Free Churchers" there always remains the but-we-don't-see-it-that-way factor that is hard to go beyond, when the next one can totally agree. I certainly believe that Volf's ideas will find resonance with many readers/prayers/hopers, but in the end, it still lacks the unifying force that remains in the mainline traditions of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy (although some would argue that Orthodox are not unified in any real sense, but that's another story...) which leads them to lack a real, unified alternative to modern society. In chapter 3, Volf argues that it is the Holy Spirit that actualizes the Church. Of course, but that is also the problem with Free Church theology. Its theological identity is always playing second fiddle to its non-conformist, non-structured ecclesial identity, leading to a least common denominator "denomination". What is most essential is then the question. But since when is the Tradition or scripture minimalist? Volf doesn't help there. Although chapter 6 tries to define what it means to be "catholic" (according to the whole), it really doesn't ring true.Second, his ecclesiology and trinitarianism tend towards individualism, since he still fails to deal substantially with the Eucharist and Baptism and traditional Trinitarian theology (the heart of traditional ecclesiology). Since his ecclesiology is essentially individualistic (Enlightenment?), it makes sense for him to do this, but it totally misses the point. Even while he claims trinitarian models for his approach, I found them lacking in substance. God is more than three roles, three persons united in love or a common substance. (He follows Moltmann's lead in seeing the three Persons of God as individuals united in self-giving. There is certainly precedent for this in the past, starting with St. Gregory Nazianzus' Christology, but it still doesn't go far enough, or perhaps it goes too far!). What unites "God" is the Father- God proper. The Son and Spirit are not the head. What really defines Christian theology is that God exists not as three individuals with relations to each other, but as three who are relations. There is a monarchical order, even if it is beyond our understanding. And this, too, Volf criticizes in Zizioulas, since faith for Volf is rationalization, not the faith of children. Z argues for a suprarational approach/experience of the Church in the context of liturgical realities, not cognitive reflections. And this is the real heart of the issue. If we are to image the Trinity, our imaging is in what we are. I am not really me unless I am united to you. I realize that I am late coming to the ‘Handmaid’ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I don’t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwood’s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.I confess, I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. ‘If I have an egg, what more can I want?’ There are tons of this fluff.Atwood’s view of the future, and I assume that’s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroine’s life, or existence.I couldn’t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?

I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."She says, “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. The women there have no layers of life or experience. They are expected only to fulfill their narrow role.Why is procreation such a focus? Because of falling birth rates among white people. This book doesn't discuss race except one small spot near the end. It's as if there is only one race in Gilead. And the only people in that race with any power are men.The main character, Offred (literally of Fred named after the Commander she serves) is the perfect blend of weak and strong. She tells us of her past and says, “When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.” But her life is not beautiful. And Atwood straddles the line of past and present, sending back and forth in a way that keeps you wanting more. Just as Offred wants more. Just as we all want more for ourselves and the generations of women coming after us.If you read this book long ago, pick it up again. If you haven't yet read it, move it up to the top of your TBR. Buy it for friends. Buy for your sons and daughters. Use it to teach and to learn what kind of world we could be if we stop valuing the diversity of all people.

Perfect last line to this book as I was left with so many questions at the end...the first of which was simply, "Huh?".This book confused me. Given all of the hype around it, I was expecting much more from this book. It was decent and I can completely understand how it would translate well into a mini-series or movie...but I just couldn't get my head around how/why things changed so quickly in society...over night, all women's rights were taken away but there seemed to be little information as to who or why. I was further confused by tourists coming into Gilead...why were there fully functioning societies outside of Gilead that seem to have been unaffected by whatever caused this tremendous shift in US society. How could this have gone on for so long afterwards without a civil war of sorts breaking out. Without having more information of the total collapse of society and a little more longevity of what lead to the collapse, it was hard to buy into this tale.If I could buy into the collapse of society and the development of Gilead to save the human race, there just wasn't enough information on how the Handmaids, the Aunts, etc were chosen, why they took healthy children away from their birth families and assigned the mothers of those children to other households for procreation...none of it made much sense. Also, what happened to the women in the colonies, the "unbabies", etc.There was a great core to this story, just not enough detail to support any of it so I was very disappointed in the end.

There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Very interesting story. But I was greatly disappointed that the ending was full of holes. The main character had to guard her every thought, yet the ending reveals the story is being told based on her diary. Even if she'd had writing materials, which she didn't, she'd never have dared write down her thoughts and risk the results of exposure. Big let down.

I have to admit while parts of this novel where intriguing, most of it, I found difficult get through. The beginning until half way through was quite boring and if it hadn't been a required text for class I would've dropped it. On the other hand it was different and lacked the cliche main character that fights for freedom and justice, but then again that's the kind of character I like. I do recommend trying it for yourself as it wasn't a terrible read. I loved the ending though. It was open ended leaving you able to create an ending that you would like to have happened.
