What I liked about this book was the mind boggling amount of research and documentation that the author lays as the foundation for his assessment on the Kursk battle.This book is from the first page straight forward in its matter of fact, historical tone. As such, it is going to appeal to the hard core military history enthusiasts.I did not know, for example that the SS broke through all three defensive belts.Or that Citadel was called off in the middle of the battle, due to the Allied invasion of Sicily. That von Manstein argued vehemently to continue Citadel.Now, this 600+ page book is written in a clearly pro-Soviet prose, but the author is a straight shooter, and criticizes the Soviet commanders for their petty jealousies and backstage fighting amongst themselves, not cooperating with each other during the titanic tank battle...
I bought this book not knowing what the myth was - but I did want to learn more about the Battle of Kursk. Author Valeriy Zamulin grew up and lives near the town of Prokhorovka, and was the Director of Research at the Prokhorovka Battlefield Park Museum for 13 years. This book is packed with data, tables of organization, information regarding weapons, which combat unit served in what area, killed, wounded, how many tanks were operational for each side on what day just to give a few examples. Since it is an operational history, it is a day by day, often hour or minute by minute accounting of the fighting that occurred in the southern attack on the Kursk Bulge from July 5-15th. Specifically, the Voronezh Front where the combat led to the town of Prokhorovka.So, what is the myth? There are several. For many years after WW2, the Germans and Soviets had an interest to inflate the size and scope of the battle - the Germans to save face from loosing and the Soviets to explain such high losses. Authors such as Martin Caidin, while a fantastic story teller, often did not do the research needed and perpetuated this myth. In more recent years, post cold war, new information has been shed. David Glantz 1999 book The Battle of Kursk is an example. Today, I saw an online article by Michael J. Licari that also attacks the myths of Kursk. Another myth is that the Battle of Prokhorovka was the turning point (not really, the Northern attack had already failed and the Germans had already lost more than they could afford). The issue of the Soviet `counter attack' and who was responsible is explored as well as several others.Impressive things about this book - research - primary sources. The author was able to access many declassified Soviet documents from the Ministry of Defense, unpublished recollections of soldiers, after action reports, unit reports from each day, actual orders. 75% of the Bibliography is Soviet material, 20% German archives and the balance from other authors. Zamulin knows some of these sources conflict with each other - no commander wants to admit he screwed up, so sometimes things are embellished or left out...especially in armies where you can get shot for making mistakes.There are many excellent B&W photos that help show terrain, weapons, soldiers, color pages of the current view of the battlefield. The author admits the topographical map is hard to read, the CGI maps are good to see where units were on which day, and they too, take studying due to the scale of the map. However, they do add value to the book.This is not light reading. It is serious, well written, very good history. It can bog down a bit at times with the detail, debate over the number of vehicles involved, but it provides a much needed view of `the other side of the hill'. It does not glorify either side; in fact, the author is pretty tough on the Soviets. It's pricey, but for serious historians, worth the purchase.
This is an excellent book. It is not a one sided account-the author takes pains to back up any assertions he has gleaned from his access to formerly secret Soviet archives with contrasting German Wehrmacht reports. In short, the formerly unquestioned belief of Prokhorova being the most gigantic tank battle ever is well & truly demolished, but that isn't to say that there was not a very large conflict around the place. He also points out-and a lot of folks sort of gloss this over-that "Citadel" as originally conceived was a dead letter very early on (although Manstein & Company were still going for a tactical victory), that the withdrawal of the SS Panzer Corps didn't occur as soon as the Western Allies invaded Sicily and they were in fact still around when the Soviets attacked on the Mius. And the translator gets a hat tip, too. Well worth your time.
It was VERY thorouh but tedious. You learn that the numbers associated with this battle are greatly exaggerated. Also the author, a russian officer in the battle isn't afraid to admit the many mistakes made by the Russians and that they literally threw away the lives of thousands of Russian soldiers.. Interesting that the medaling of Stalin was simaler to Hitlers' and had the same ill effect. If you're really into this battle it covers it all but be prepared for some heavy slogging through pages of statistics..
Of the many books on the Battle of Kursk, and the tank clash between the 5th Guards Tank Army and SS Panzer Corps, this is the best. Very detailed, and based on research in the Russian and German archives, it tells the story from the strategic (Stalin and STAVKA); operational (Front and army commanders); and tactical levels. One caveat: reading it on a Kindle takes discipline, and time as maps are not clear.
An indispensable book about this seminal battle about which there is still so much exaggeration and myth. The best book about Kursk based mainly on soviet records. He brings an unrivalled background. and knowledge to this book which shines through. His admiration for the soldiers of the red army, your average 'ivan', gives this book an humanity that is often lacking in accounts of the red army in english.
