It’s exceptionally well written, and the author carried me right into the midst of her experiences. She has a gift, and I do hope she’ll be writing many more books. It’s a very honest story about loving, and looking after, her elderly mother as she disappears gradually into the nightmare of dementia; but it’s so much more than that. I fell in love with her family, especially her mother, and found myself sharing their joys, their sorrows and tensions, their personal growth, and their very traumatic journey with a woman of extraordinary character. If you love someone who is battling with dementia in any of its forms, this is for you. If not, it’s still for you, because you’ll learn so much and because, despite the topic, this is a positive and, dare I say, ‘enjoyable’ read.

I especially liked the author’s loving yet complete depictions of family life and her honesty in sharing her own emotional battles and those of her siblings as they discover, adapt and make decisions pertaining to their care for their delightful mother. Who as the reader discovers, is sometimes not so delightful. The appendix in the back is especially useful to those just entering this new stage in family living. As one who went through similar caregiving love and decisions with my mother, the book rings true especially about the leave takings that happen bit by bit. If one needs to read quickly by finding passages that will treat with a current issue you are facing, the chapter titles and subheadings will be most helpful. This is a true-story, about characters you will remember; it is engaging, funny with a clear voice from one daughter, affirming life in all its stages. It’s a good read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I am also a caregiver and have experienced some similar situations. It is helpful to read about this journey and gain insight for my journey. This book should be read by caregivers dealing with loved ones with dementia.

Love this book! Couldn’t put it down!

Dementia is a very difficult thing to face but sadly, it’s one that many families try to navigate every day. While the details of the journey are unique to the individual, there are so many parts of this story that are familiar to many. Reading it was like being on the emotional roller coaster with the family! The story is clearly written and flows logically. It is a beautiful example of one family’s journey through a chaotic situation while maintaining their respect for “mom’s” humanity. There is a collection of helpful resources at the end that will be relevant to every family working their way through this disease. Thank you for sharing your journey so honestly!

A beautiful and touching story of Kathy's journey as caregiver of her mom with dementia. Many readers with aging parents may find themselves walking or having walked a similar path. I related to the "powerless feeling" that my husband and I had of being the distant family members when decisions were made that were out of our control with my father-in-law diagnosed with Alzheimers. I enjoyed Kathy's engaging writing style using "Mom's Path" and "My Path" to tell her story. I loved Kathy's coping strategy of "acting as if" instead of asking "What if?" About the Author

Stella Otto got her first taste for fruit growing during annual family outings to the U-pick orchards of western Massachusetts. Following receipt of a B.S. in horticulture from Michigan State University, she worked at one of largest tree fruit nurseries in the U.S and a major tart cherry orchard near Traverse City, MI, before she and her husband eventually started their own diversified fruit farm in northern Michigan. Stella has authored two books, the award-winning The Backyard Orchardist, and The Backyard Berry Book. She has written freelance articles for numerous magazines, appeared on the Discovery Channel, and been interviewed on NPR and other gardening radio programs. Stella presently cultivates a fruitful family garden and enjoys her horses on a 10-acre homestead in northern Michigan. In my extensive research into available orchard varieties for a particuliar zone this book came up repeatedly as THE resource for home orchardists. It is very comprehensive. It is also very dry. I will definitely use as a reference over and over. Saying that I would really have appreciated a book with photos of examples of diseases and pests. Line drawings are pretty useless. There are also a lot of new varieties avavilable that are not listed in this book. I am guessing new ones become available every year. I would wish that some day someone will rewrite this book with photos of a bare root delivered tree, the hole, the planting, the tree after it is pruned back, first year, second year, etc. Now that would be worth every penny.

I am interested in planting some fruit trees, but I knew that I needed to know everything about them before planting. I found this cheap book here on Amazon and ordered it promptly. This book has everything you need to know! I was surprised at the detailed content, detailed drawings, and the well-written, interesting style of this book. I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to grow a Backyard Orchard.

This is a great book if you love to grow fruit trees. My husband is always in the garden and ventures out with new plants. He was very happy to read all of the great info inside.

While I am a gardener, I have never planted or taken care of fruit trees. I learned a lot from the information presented and feel confident to pick an area to plant my trees, what things I need to consider to buy trees appropriate for my area and how to take care of them. The book is not about pest control or advanced tree care.

I just purchase property with a large orchard, and I didn't have a clue how to take care of the property. This book certainly helped me to understand what the trees need to prosper. I didn't realize how much work was involved. Anyone want to buy an orchard?his book certainly gave me a better understanding of what the trees need to prosper.

I have learned a few things (very few) from this book, but on the whole wish I had found a different book. Like many of these how-to-do it books that purport to be a compendium of everything there are chapters included with little valuable information. It's as though the editor said, "You've got to have a chapter on plums.", so the author includes one that has some general facts but no specific information that would make the reader either run out and buy plums enthusiastically or avoid them entirely. Obviously the author has no knowledge of figs, which are not included. Nut trees are also absent. So the subtitle misrepresents the book.

I'm going to make everyone's life a little easier since all the reviews are for all editions of the book which I find ridiculous. I am looking for the one with the illustrations. There was a beautiful edition by La Moderna Poecia in Miami which closed years ago. This is NOT THAT EDITION. The one with the girl looking at the book on a chair is a crappy edition. No illustrations whatsoever and very small font. This pretty much looks like it was typed up on Microsoft Word - word for word - and then sold as is. The worst edition of this great book. Don't get me wrong. This book is a classic of literature. I grew up reading this book and I love it. I bought this edition as a gift and I felt very sad and disappointed when I opened the package. This is a profanation to the original one. Don't waste neither your money nor your time buying this edition of this wonderful book. Look for another option.

This is a master piece, or actually a combination of master pieces by Jose Marti. For Cuban people, he needs no introduction. For other Spanish speaking people you just need to know he is probably the greatest thinker from the Hispanic American world in the 19th century.This compilation is a must have for every child that can read or understand Spanish.

This edition is a desecration of a classic work by Cuba's cultural hero of the late 19th century. Among the many other distinguished accomplishments achieved in his brief life, Marti was a gifted poet and writer, and La Edad de Oro is a digest of poems, stories, and sayings that the writer compiled to entertain and instruct younger readers. The subject matter ranges from a retelling of Homer's Iliad to fairy tales to history that Marti thought every child should know.I purchased this book because my wife is Cuban and she had memorized some of the poems in the book when she was a student and still remembers them fondly. It was not until I found a different edition of the book that I realized the extent of the butchery that this edition had suffered at the hands of a publisher who obviously had no scruples about presenting the writing in any organized fashion. As other reviewers have mentioned, this edition is not only stripped of the illustrations that should accompany the text, but the text itself is one rambling document with no demarcations to indicate where one piece ends and the next one begins. I have never seen anything like this. It should never have gone to press like this, and you should choose another edition if you are interested in the book.

I read this book when I was little, and loved all its stories. Penned by Jose Marti, if you can read Spanish it's a wonderful collection to read to your children.

Horrible edition. I had the original book as a child, this is a joke, a disrespectful copy for such an amazing book

I had this book in my youth and was glad to see that it had been revived. As a Cuban and a poet this type of reading warms the heart.

Best book I read in ages. An historical novel, it relies much on the factual history of the early church in Ireland and the rise of the Vikings in Scandinavia, neither of which I knew much about. It is a swashbuckling tale of pirates and priests, Kings and slaves, with epic battles on land and sea, untold riches, love, and secular and religious intrigue. It also deals heavily with the the natures of Islamic and Christian faith. Islam is depicted, on the whole, with respect. Christian faith too is seen as, for the most part, virtuous, although the morality of its earthly leaders is questioned. I found the depiction of the struggles with doubt and anger towards God of the Christian protagonist, Aidan, to be most interesting. Mr. Lawhead is a great story teller.

This was an excellent book and great history lesson, but I almost didn't make it through the beginning. I heard it started slow, but it was more pages of slow beginning than I can hack. If I hadn't heard how good it was from so many people, I would have put it down. The story follows a monk kidnapped by Vikings, teaching about the Viking culture and Byzantium history in a fantastic and fun way. My advice? Read it, but speed read the first 100 pages or so.

I loved this book! It had action, adventure and the thing I loved most was that this book was impossible to predict what was going to happen. A lot of books you can do that with, but not with this one. I was always like, whoa, didn't see that coming! It's a long book, but it held me captive 'til the end. I kept waiting and wondering if he was going to find his faith again and I had no idea how it would end. The ending didn't disappoint. I originally picked this out for my teen boys for homeschool high school literature. They love action and adventure which this has lots of. Both of my boys have advanced reading skills, there's just some heavy scenes, such as graphic violent physical abuse. There's also a scene where he attempts to buy a prostitute's services and lose his virginity, though it doesn't actually occur and it's very brief. Because of those parts, but mainly the graphic images of men being brutally tortured, I'm not going to have my kids read this. Maybe in a few more years. In case you were thinking about this for your teen, I wanted to caution you. Personally I strongly dislike pointless violence, but it had purpose in this book, and since it was such a part of the main character's life it belonged in the book, it was just very well-described. The book is well-written and addicting. I love how you see the character change as the story progresses. The character development is phenomenal! All of the characters are so realistic and you just get sucked into the story. It's one of the best books I've ever read. This author has a gift! I'll be reading his other books now. If you love historical novels that are full of adventure and keep you guessing at every turn, you will love this story and it will not disappoint!

What happens in the next 650 pages is a pilgrimage of faith that makes the ministry of the apostle Paul look like a piece of cake. The lessons Aiden learned can only be understood and appreciated by following his steps and missteps. The conclusion powerfully answers the question so many Christians have asked of God, why?

This is a book you will go back to read many times in your life. I'm on reading three or four. This is my favorite Lawhead book by far. His Robin Hood trilogy is also quite good. This book is a great combination of historical fiction and a redemption story. I look forward to sharing this powerful story with my sons once they're old enough (mid-school) to handle some of the more intense portions of the story.

I first read Byzantium perhaps twelve years ago and did what I seldom do and read it again. It is just as fresh now as then. It is the best book to be written since the advent of the printing press. No other Author can impart the raw emotions and articulate the finest point of theology like Stephen Lawhead. I have desired to meet with him several times over the years but alas my time draws near. May you read this classic tale and feel the inspiration I feel. Though the book is long, it is not tiresome. In fact it has kept me awake several nights, during both readings.

I teach second grade, and this was a great book for developing their understanding of what a polygon is. Engaging words and cute drawings too. The whole math picture book series by Marcie Aboff is worth looking into.

My assistant principal handed me a list of books she wanted purchased after attending a conference. This was one of several and it is helping to update our non-fiction 500s section of our media center. Should correlate well with Common Core.

Exquisite.Simply exquisite.On lovely, thick pages fourteen iconic English Country Houses are featured celebrating diverse styles beginning with the Jacobean, traveling through the Baroque, Palladian, Regency, Gothic Revival to the Victorian. In the foreword of this book, the English country house is described by Sir Roy Strong:"They are never showy on the outside. Exteriors are always concerned with sobriety and silhouette, which only heightens the revelation when the door is thrown open and the visitor enters to be astonished by the dazzling opulence within."The rooms in this book ARE a revelation--there are about 15 full-page and half-page photos of each home featuring rooms, details of rooms, chapels and noteworthy paintings, carvings, and sculpture in the homes. There is also an exterior view of each home.The book explains that the English country house had a purpose beyond meaning to impress. They were, in the words of Strong, "cultural oases where it was possible to see Old Master paintings, antique sculpture, assemblies of rarities and substantial libraries, as well as collections of drawings, engravings and manuscripts." As England was ruled by a King/Queen subject to Parliament, the country house was more than a refuge for the owner, it was his power base. The King came to the owner's home, and stayed in the house's state rooms, not vice-versa.There is a detailed history of each home from their inception to the present day by author/historian Jeremy Musson. You may want a timeline of English Royalty and a map of England to mentally place the homes as you read. For lovers of Palladio and Adam, English Country House Interiors is a real feast.It is a must-have reference for those of us who can only dream of living in suchrich interiors. It is wonderful for fireside reflections. I have stacks of bookon the English Country House, and this is by far the best.

I enjoyed this book and am happy to have in my design library.
