The Cannabis Manifesto has taken a plethora of information about all aspects of cannabis from it's medical and social history to current science, and put it into one small, concise, and hugely informative easy to read book. Since first learning about Steve DeAngelo and Harborside Health Center in California, I have looked up to and admired him for his activism, his tenacity, and his unwavering dedication to bringing the truth about cannabis to the mainstream. I almost didn't get this book, but after reading what Johnny Green wrote about it, I decided to go ahead and buy it for my library. I am so glad I did and only wish I could buy a truckload of this book to pass out to everyone I know who is on the fence about trying cannabis medicine, and also to the sometimes offensive know-it-alls, like me. Thanks Steve. You have created a gem for cannabis newbies as well as cannabis veterans. Bernie is the only Presidential candidate to receive an “A” on the issue of marijuana legalization. However, when I vainly tried to Google my online article, up popped The Cannabis Manifesto by Steve DeAngelo. Humbled, I ordered his book, read it, and loved it.There are many good books about marijuana, but most authors try to deny their own personal experiences in order to “objectively” portray an “unbiased” examination of the issue. Not, Steve DeAngelo. What makes his book such compelling reading is his unapologetic personal approach to the issue. Steve openly tells of smoking pot as a teenager with a close black friend called Eddie. Both of them got caught and busted, but because Eddie was poor and black, while Steve was middle-class and white; Eddie’s education and career prospects were ruined, not Steve’s. “I was protected by white privilege as a teenager, so my early scrapes with the law left me relatively unscathed…but most low-income minority youth arrested for cannabis are locked out of education and employment.”There are many other books that give ample factual information about marijuana and its history. This book is also filled with facts. But Steve goes beyond dispensing information; he makes a passionate plea to end the social injustice of prohibition. Whereas others make the specious argument that marijuana should be legal because it isn’t as addictive or dangerous as alcohol or tobacco; DeAngelo makes a compelling argument that cannabis should be legal because it is healthy and increases well-being.Personally, I believe it doesn’t matter if a mood-altering drug is healthy or unhealthy, addicting or non-addicting, popular or unpopular. Prohibition of drugs, whether marijuana, alcohol, or whatever, only makes those drugs more dangerous and more addicting. DeAngelo makes this case brilliantly and calls for government regulation of marijuana to both protect the environment and make certain marijuana isn’t contaminated with toxic additives. Of course, as politicians learned during alcohol Prohibition, the government can’t regulate a substance to reduce risk, if the substance is illegal. Steve DeAngelo sums this idea up succinctly: “The dangers of the illicit market are the real threat--not cannabis itself.”Whereas my expertise is in the area of addiction, his expertise is in the area or medical marijuana. Although he distinguishes between “medical use” and “adult use,” (believing the word adult is more apropos than recreational,) he makes the cogent argument it often difficult to discern one from the other. Is smoking marijuana to relieve pain, medical use? If you said yes, is smoking marijuana to relieve the emotional pain of anxiety, medical use? It shouldn’t matter. But it does matter if you live in a state where only medical marijuana is legal, but recreational marijuana is not. Advocating medical marijuana without endorsing recreational marijuana is like saying gays should have equal rights, but can't marry. The only way to guarantee that anyone who needs marijuana for medical reasons can get it is to legalize marijuana for medical and non-medical use.We are at the tipping point. Although the author boldly proclaims, “Legalization cannot and will not be stopped,” this statement will only be true, if we make it true. Sitting around smoking weed and watching Bob’s Burgers will do nothing to legalize cannabis. Buying this book, reading it, and becoming a political activist can push cannabis legalization past the tipping point. A toke is useless without a vote.

This is one of two prequels to the HUNGRY CITIES set of four novels. The other prequel, which continues the story of Fever Crumb, is A WEB OF AIR. This first adventure of young Fever takes place several thousand years before the HUNGRY CITIES events. We see such things as the origin of traction cities, the origin of the London Engineers Guild, and even the origin of probably the most popular character in the HUNGRY CITIES novels, as well as the beginnings of lighter-than-air aviation in this distant future where almost all technology has been lost.Reading over the many reviews of this novel on amazon.co.uk (where it has been available for a year), I found that most reviewers had two complaints: (1) the deliberately weird names of many of the characters was distracting; and (2) the novel has a very uneven pace with little happening until midway, when the revelations and action start coming thick and fast.I found two problems that somewhat hampered my enjoyment. First, the main character, Fever Crumb, is lacking in both personality and initiative, and is almost entirely passive until the very end of the novel. Since the story is about her, this places a void right in the center of the novel. The other problem I had was that a major character, Kit Solent, seems to know things that he is not in a position to know... such as that Fever may have access to the memories of the last mutant ruler of London, Auric Godshawk, and know the secrets of his final inventions. How can Solent know this, when Fever's mother (who shows up late in the novel) and Fever's father, both of whom worked closely with Godshawk, don't know it? Unless Reeve dropped a brief, elliptic hint that I missed (and he does do such things), there is no explanation within the novel, and no possible explanation given the circumstances set forth during the novel.Another disappointment for me was that previously-mentioned origin story given for a major character in the Hungry Cities quartet. In a sense, the story tells us too much... I would have preferred that this character's early life (or rather living death) remain mostly a mystery.But these are quibbles. On balance, this is an excellent, well-written and continually interesting novel. I hope A WEB OF AIR will allow Fever Crumb to develop some personality and initiative... perhaps the existence of this second chapter in her saga is the reason the author dials Fever's human-interest quotient so very far back in the present adventure.

I started reading this series when I heard that Peter Jackson was going to film some of the books. After reading the first two volumes, I understand why. Unique vision of an apocalyptic future society, interesting characters who develop over time and fascinating plot twists. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in sci-fi or Steampunk.

I have read two of the "Mortal Engines" book by this author, and this book was a preview of that series. The making of the Stalker, "Shrike"; and the beginnings of the giant moving cities. I am planning to read the next book.

Great for middle grade reading levels. Fever Crumb is a delicious post-apocalyptic novel about a girl in search of her own history. But this book is not chick lit--far from it. The protagonist is a delightful blend of reserve, compassion, and wisdom that suggests a new female character type that will appeal to boys as well as girls. Appropriate for advanced readers in junior high, this book will also be enjoyed by adults. It's cool in a Neil Gaiman meets Hugo way, with magical creatures and lots of adventure while also building awareness about problems of prejudice, stereotype, and violence in contemporary life.

This is the first book of a trilogy prequel to the young adult Predator Cities series. We read it in my monthly SF/F book discussion group. I was intrigued by the vision of the post-apocalyptic steam punk future where people scrounge on the remnants of the previous techno world, re-learning the laws of nature and technology, as the world is sliding into a new ice age. Intrigued me sufficiently that I am checking out the rest of the series.

With the exception of the distracting character names, this book is a great read. It's fun to get some backstory behind the Mortal Engines series. Love it.

These guys can be trusted and it is no surprise that Harvard University Press thought so too. (Full disclosure: I don't know the authors and I am not working in any way for HarvardUP. I am a law professor, however, and I hate to spend my money and shelf space on books by wannabe experts that are merely riding a wave by quickly putting together some platitudes about a topic many people are seeking more information on.)

I purchased this looking for a deeper legal understanding of blockchains. For the first 170 pages, this read more like Nathaniel Popper's _Digital Gold_, giving the historical narrative of cryptocurrencies, and explaining what the blockchain is, and why it exists. Other than pointing out some of the privacy and legal issues, the authors don’t evaluate the value added of blockchain applications. The authors cite a number of initiatives and projects and fail to mention that there are few successful blockchain commercial applications. Truth is, most applications use blockchain for marketing reasons, just like in the dot com bubble days, companies would add dot com to their names so their stock price would go up.

Even though it is advertised as a reference for insurance professionals, the material covered applies to virtually any area of predictive analytics, including healthcare, market research, reliability and fraud analysis. Given its value to the practitioner, it is definitely a worthy purchase. I am looking forward to Volume II.

It is a gooD book introducinG many modern models and aproaches to everdyday problem of someone involved with insurance industries, they are self contained within each chapter so in case you need to read any particular approach to problem there is no problem, explanations are clear, do not expect something easy to understand because o this, the content is at a high mathematical level, but most of the techniques involve applications through software, especially R , so it is a good book on it's own

I hope you have better things to do with your life than reading this dreadfully organized book of boredom and pedantic nitty-grittiness.

Predictive modeling has become a hot topic in light of the new era of Big Data that is emerging. It occupies a unique position at the intersection of traditional statistical methods and machine learning algorithms. Practitioners of the art of model-building can benefit from the knowledge base provided by both disciplines. This excellent compendium focuses mainly on the statistical side of the equation. It offers comprehensive coverage of the relevant statistical techniques and can serve as a valuable reference and resource. The editors should be commended for the high quality of both the content and writing maintained throughout.Each chapter is almost a stand-alone mini-textbook on a particular method, and is introduced by a brief and informative summary. Each method is illustrated with well-developed insurance-related applications and R code for implementing the analyses. The presentation is sometimes at a fairly high mathematical level, but remains firmly moored to practical applications. Although the context is actuarial science, it may well be of interest to a wider audience.Perhaps the editors can be persuaded to undertake an equally impressive volume devoted to the machine-learning side of predictive modeling. Personally, I would like to see chapters dealing with various popular machine-learning techniques such as CART, Lasso, neural nets, genetic algorithms, KNN etc. Chapters on such supervised learning techniques would complement the excellent chapter by Louise Francis on unsupervised learning in the current volume. In any case, I look forward to the second planned companion volume that will present a wide range of case studies on actual projects.

I bought both the Kindle version and the hard cover. Below are my comments:Kindle version is difficult to follow since a lot of the mathematical notations show up in bigger fonts and in picture format than actual text. -- strongly not recommend buying the kindle versionThe book was written by multiple authors split up by chapter. Each chapter has examples. About 2/3 of the chapters either have no data or have dataset posted but without the R code to supplement it. When contacting authors for the R code for chapter examples, most of them are reluctant to share. Therefore, this book is not as useful as it seems.

As much can be learned from the illustrations as from the actual text.Mojica always includes some fact that is sure to amaze her reader. The tower of books written about Abraham Lincoln in the Learning Center for Education and Leadership is astonishing.As always, Mojica's book would be an excellent addition to any school library or classroom or as a gift for a child who enjoys history. However, as a Canadian who is not up on all American history, I would like to know whatever happened to John Wilkins Booth.

I can't tell you how impressed I am with author, Barbara Ann Mojica, and the notable series she has written for children.What a clever way for children to learn and grasp history! Excellent!!!

This book is required reading for anyone studying the Tibetan Bardo tradition. Professor Cuevas exposes the prejudices of some revered authors on the subject, including pioneer Evans Wentz, who Cuevas points out gave the work its misleading name. As other highly personalized interpretations followed from Tim Leary's The Psychedelic Experience to E.J. Gold's The American Book of the Dead, little attention was given to the actual historical context of these ideas. Cuevas digs deeply into the available records finding links between Bon and Buddhist traditions that produced not one but many works on the bardo. Many of the key ideas westerners associate with the bardo writings are traced back to their source in Hindu tradition. Cuevas takes time to acquaint the reader with neglected facets of these teachings from their earliest form to nearly forgotten elaborations revealing an until now lost world of rich and varied contributions.
