This book contains twenty chapters plus a comprehensive index. Each chapter is written by a distinguished individual in his or her field. Each chapter consists of general opening remarks, detailed information about the subject of each chapter, a chapter summary at the end of each chapter, discussion questions and a list of references for further reading. The lead authors have created a text that would serve double duty as either an adequate text for an introductory lower division course on agronomy/plant sciences, or as a supplemental text for an upper division plant biology course which looks at the social and ethical dimensions of biotechnology and genetically modified organisms.All the contributors share the belief that agricultural biotechnology in its current manifestation is merely an extension of biology in the natural world, and is but one consequence of Watson & Crick's monumental discovery. Chrispeels and Sadava, the two contributors responsible for compiling the text, boldly state that the biggest beneficiaries of the new GM technology will be those living in the developing countries, and as such reflects the standard party line of the pro-ag-biotech groups and organizations.All inherent biases aside, the book is highly notable because of several bold admissions made throughout the text. First, the authors readily admit that agricultural biotechnology has no defensible place or justification in a world currently awash in plentiful food, but at the same time, they do believe that biotechnology will play an important role in tomorrow's world agriculture. Second, the also readily concede that distribution of food, and not its production, is the main culprit for hunger, but other issues do play an important role. Related to this is their admission that the ability to pay for food matters more than the supply of food itself; if people can pay for it, they will get it (here their words on the subject echo many of the thoughts put forth by Amartya Sen, and before him, Susan George). Third, they admit that most scientists working in the field of population and demography in the late 1960s and early 1970s made flat out wrong predictions about the infamous 'population bomb', and that predictions made today many not come to pass tomorrow- they are just guesses about the future. Here they appear to be backing away from the incendiary rhetoric of environmental luminaries such as Paul Ehrlich and Lester Brown. Fourth, and quite possibly the boldest admission of the text, was their concession that agricultural biotechnology has been oversold. Apparently, they saw fit to stop short of saying that ag-biotech has been and continues to be hyped into the stratosphere, but their very admission alone is satisfactory, as they later lay most of the blame for today's hysteria and urban myths surrounding ag-biotech and GM technologies upon the overselling of the technologies, where it justifiably belongs.Indeed, the authors' concern for the overselling of the promise and potential of biotechnology is readily apparent in the final chapter of the book, where they address the myths and realities of agricultural biotechnology. However, even the authors can not resist the temptation to sell the reader on the potential benefits of an agricultural biotechnology, and the book includes chapters on integrated pest management incorporating the scientific advances of ag-biotech (Chapter 16), weed control strategies using biotechnology (Chapter 17), GM technology as a tool for promoting green agriculture (Chapter 18), and the use of plants as biological factories (Chapter 19).Generally speaking, Chapters 1 through 5 lay down the rationale for incorporation of ag-biotech in food production, and chapters 6 through 15 explain the how to, the ins and outs of the technology and how genetic modification of crops is achieved. Also, chapters 6 through 15 cover all the standard topics one would find in a regular course on agronomy, crop science and plant biology, from plant cell and molecular biology, plant growth and development, seeds and seed technology, the ins and outs of photosynthesis and the physical, biological and environmental factors associated with it, soils and root zone systems, nitrogen cycling, to the historical basis for crop breeding (with some paleo-anthropological perspectives) and the gradual leap from breeding via classical techniques to modern, biotech based methods. Chapter 15 also looks at crop disease and its management from a molecular genetic standpoint, and strikes me as a means to include students in plant pathology.Additionally, the authors paid considerable attention to the problems and challenges of agriculture in Third World countries, in an attempt to demonstrate the veracity of their belief that GM technology can do much to assist the inhabitants there. However, in the process, they belatedly demonstrate that these technologies have been developed to address symptoms of more complex and fundamental problems having an economic, environmental and/or socio-historical basis. Yet, the authors must be credited for admitting that the real need in developing countries is for more research support to address their specific physical and environmental conditions, and for demonstrating that in every single instance where consumer incomes rise and the socio-economic status of women advances, there is an inevitable decrease in birth rates, hunger and malnutrition.Thus, the contributors freely admit that their research and scientific activities chase phantom problems and non-problems. They also admit, albeit obliquely, that ag-biotech in its current manifestation does not address the needs or the fundamental problems faced in the developing or the developed world. In fact, on the one hand, researchers have occupied themselves with testing the limits of GM technology, seeing what they can do, and exploring different directions, while on the other hand, government institutions and corporations have directed their efforts at technological developments for which they have proprietary control, and increasingly, total control over distribution and other supporting activities. Alas, the authors have chosen, perhaps unwisely, to offer any comments on this state of affairs, and what it may mean for everyone.In sum, this book makes quite a few bold admissions, some directly, but most indirectly, and as such, is a necessary read for those interested in the topics of ag-biotech, genetic modification technologies, food production and safety, and crop science in general. This book has been bringing a smile to my face for twenty + years. Its great for kids, and I just purchased another copy to use as an introduction for my friend's children to passover.

This darling 37-page book offers even the smallest of children--babies and toddlers too--a funny Passover feast.The poem has barely more than 200 words, but hilariously recounts the arrival of guests--while counting their 19 noses, 38 thumbs, freckles and the hosts' insufficient chairs. It wanders through places they might find seats, including "in the attic,/ Or on bookshelves in pairs,"... "in the sink/ Soaking suds with the pans," camped out "in the carport" or in "empty trash cans."For the Kiddush (blessing the wine) the family will stand, so that's no problem, but the child narrator knows that sitting down for the meal will land "half on the floor." He thinks of stacking everyone in one chair, and reading "the Haggadah/ Sing songs filled with hope,/ With one book at the bottom/And a long periscope."I won't spoil any of the glorious special effects. Suffice it to say, readers will delight in the book's dipping of greens, funny hiding of matzah and hysterical asking of four questions. (Even Elijah brings a laugh.) This is the best preschool/young elementary school Passover book that I have read. Both the text and the pictures are wonderful! The book is presumably told from the view of a young child. The narrator lets everyone know that 19 guests are coming over for Seder but the host only has nine chairs. The narrator envisions putting everyone on one chair, having people share chairs, and the mess that will be created when everyone rinses the parsley. The story is told in rhyme and introduces the major Passover contents over the course of the story--Elijah, matzah, four questions, etc. I absolutely loved reading this book and the children that I read it too also loved it!

This review is written by someone who spent her earliest family get-togethers sitting on a piano bench. Often with a smaller cousin.Clever rhyming story about a seder with nineteen guests and nine chairs.

Poor Runt is the misunderstood sibling in this Thanksgiving tale. He just wants to save his brother from the dinner table but "nobody listens to Runt." There are lots of details in the illustrations and the repetitive narrative of the story grabs little ones right into the story. I read this to my preschool class for years and bought a copy for myself to read to my someday grandchildren. For me, this is a Thanksgiving classic and sure to make turkey feathers wiggle!

I got Turk and Runt after my kid fell in love with the Dino-Sports series by Lisa Wheeler. My five year old loves this tale about a fat juicy turkey named Turk and his little "Runt" brother who tries to save him from becoming someone's Thanksgiving Day feast. The parents are extremely proud and clueless.... Before the selection begins (people coming to select their bird on the farm) the parents are sure Turk will be the first one chosen. But chosen for what? They think he will be in a broad-way hit or part of a sports team. "He's a dancer," said his mother. "He's an athlete," said his father. "He's a goner," said his brother, Runt. No one seems to know what is going on but Runt. We will be reading this every Thanksgiving.

I bought this book for a Thanksgiving unit for my students and to this day, it is still one of their favorite books we’ve done a read-aloud with. It’s funny for kids while also imbedding lines that can be used to discuss inferencing and a wide variety of vocabulary that can be used in an extension.

You will never look at a Thanksgiving feast the same. Enjoyed reading this book to my class.

I ordered this for my Kindle, and though short, includes everything you will need to disassemble and reassemble. This same information is found in the Pistol disassembly book costing $25, but includes more pistols. If you only have this pistol to work on, fine. Otherwise, get the other manual, and save yourself some money.

I got this so that I could completely break down my 1911 gov. model series 80 and clean it, not to mention if I want to swap out factory parts for custom parts.

It is a good read but you need to study what you read because it is critical that what he says in the book is understood.

Ok not great, good for dis assembly not so good for reassembly if you have no knowledge of the 1911 it is helpful for field stripping but no clear instructions for reassembly

Great read and useful information on the finest pistol available. I definitely would recommend this to any 1911 owner/collector. Thanks a bunch!

The secondary characters of Jagger and Matt were great - dying to see who ends up with this pair.This was a great book for the beginning of a new series. Left me smiling about the ending for this special couple but eager to see what happens next!

This book had me from the first chapter, hence the fact I read it in nearly one sitting.Mackenzie Dupont endures every woman's nightmare - she's left at the alter. Not only is she left at the alter, but every bit of it happens in front of a huge socialite crowd and it ends up on the front pages of gossip magazines as well. When Mack reaches her breaking point, she decides to take matters into her own hands and do something for herself - she goes on the honeymoon meant for her and Alton, solo.Slade Rodriguez has a lot of change happening in his life at the moment. He caught his fiancee cheating with his former best friend and to top it off, she's pregnant with the friend's child. Not only that, but he's made the decision to leave his European soccer team to come play in the US, near his mother in Seattle.When Slade and Mack initially meet on the plane, and then realize they are staying at the same hotel, they give each other fake names, Hugo and Ashley, thinking that this way the other will be none the wiser about their social statuses. The chemistry is there immediately and after a hot and steamy night together, Slade up and vanishes before Mack wakes up. This spells the end of them, right? Nope, think again.Back in Seattle they encounter one another again and the chemistry is still there, but there are a lot of factors working against them. Alton, Mack's former fiance, isn't done with tormenting her and Slade's nemesis and new teammate, Jagger, causes problems when he makes a play for Mack. Will these two be able to trust one another and their feelings in order to really make a go of things?I absolutely loved this book. It was everything we've come to love about RVD books; wonderful characters, a fantastic storyline and great sub-characters as well. I also got really invested in these characters and what was going to happen to them. I felt their anguish, pain, victories and elation. I can't wait to see who else gets a book in the Red Card series, because there are certainly some great candidates with both Jagger and Matt! I highly recommend picking up this awesome title!

Despite her shock and surprise being accompanied by a niggling little sense of relief, the last thing Mackensie expected after walking down the aisle was for her (now ex) fiancee to walk right out the way she'd walked in, but that's how Rachel Van Dyken sets the scene in Risky Play.I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but there's a chance encounter, a near(ish) death experience and an exotic romantic destination all of which combine to very quickly form a bond between the main characters before life outside their idyllic bubble intrudes, and that's where the magic of Rachel writing can be found. While some of the broader plot points might seem somewhat predictable, the way the characters of both Mackensie and Slade are fleshed out as the story unfolds was fascinating.Almost like a set of scales set out of balance, while one uses their newfound freedom to grow and reinvent themselves, the other seems caught in a downward spiral, devolving as the foundation of their sense of self is stripped away, and despite hurts and bitterness, it's nevertheless their interactions with each other that draw each other towards a workable equilibrium.Then of course what I said earlier about predictability gets blown out of the water with a series of twists that I didn't see coming, and a strength of character that made me want to stand up and cheer.Reminding me exactly why I'm a fan of Rachel's writing, I found this book to be a fun, light, easy read that balanced perfectly with elements of the story that were more intense and darker.Loved it

This review refers only to the digital version of this book. I hope the print version serves as a better resource to those who have purchased it. While this book has a great deal of promise, it is riddled with typos and inaccuracies that make it unusable. Considering the fact that this work is authored by Hazen, my expectations were very high, however because the information is unreliable and basic errors proliferate throughout, it is useless to me. I would love to get a chance to see the print version to see if these problems are addressed therein.

Dear author, I'm studying for my final that is days away and you are wasting my time, I don't appreciate it.Piece of S*** book doesn't have page numbers in the index, it refers to terms by section number. To find a term I have to look through 10 pages of a section. How could anyone possibly think that's a good idea, the pages are numbered anyways!!

This slice of history is profoundly disturbing and not well enough known; it was before my time, but I was surprised that I was totally unaware of the "Groveland Boys" and their trials, the role of a young Thurgood Marshall, and much of the other territory that the book covers. So kudos to Mr. King for penning it.Many parts of the book are emotionally gripping, as a history of this incident and related ones should be. However, I must agree with "Suzanne," whose review says there was "way too much detail and the author gets sidetracked and away from the story". She's right. Particularly for the first 100-150 pages, there are constant sidetracks about Marshall's relationship with his wife (frustrating because after the earlier portions she's hardly mentioned at all), other civil rights issues and trials with which Marshall was involved, and the history of and political infighting at the NAACP and its Legal Defense Fund, that really aren't critical to the history at all. When Mr. King discusses these areas, he loses his emotional focus and power of the facts begins to fade. And then it takes some time to get back to the Groveland Boys travails, but just as you begin to get revved up, he goes on another sidetrack.Fortunately, he focuses more or less exclusively on the Groveland Boys for the last 100+ pages of the book, so it concludes with an emotional wallop. In my view, this raises it from Suzanne's three stars to four. However, I think this book could have been utterly riveting if the author has stuck to the main story instead of trying to cover too broad a swath of the history of the early civil rights movement.

I'm a native of Lake County, born 1962, raised there, graduated HS there, still call it "home." Knew the sheriff, heard the rumors. But NEVER this story, or that Thurgood came. It angered me, learning so many decades later through this book, what had happened. I reached out to the author about how this revelation affected me. The book is incredibly powerful, the author an incredible story-teller of a painful episode incredibly well sourced and researched. It is a gift. It is moving. It is timely: white people like me will never grasp fully the black experience of rightfully questioning and having trust issues with the justice system that historically failed them. Read this, let it move you, let it open your eyes and your mind. It did it for me, and I'm grateful to Gilbert King for his capable voice and tone here. LTK

Great story, but the book has the best flaw---Thurgood Marshall is just way too interesting as a character. Any scene without him just leaves me hoping he will return soon. Despite what the title of the book implies, large swaths of this book are other people researching, trying, and succeeding in the Groveland case. That said, I learned about the racial oppression and dedicated opposition that Marshall and all blacks faced in the 1940s----when people say "Make America Great Again," I hope they don't mean going back to the world of lynchings and injustice.I did have the audiobook with my Kindle edition, the narration is great.

While at times the book's exhaustive detail of the players in the case of the framed Groveland Boys can be a tad repetitive-- yes, we understand, Sheriff McCall is a true demon-- there is more than enough here to educate and hold the reader in rapt attention. Thurgood Marshall is a true American hero, that is not up for debate. That said, the supporting cast at the NAACP, the ancillary team members defending the Groveland Boys (many of whom were white and Jewish), host of heroic journalists who also risked life and limb to see the truth come to light, and even the few Floridians who were brave enough to change their minds are the real story here.I recommend this book.

Great reporting, poor storytelling. Narrative zigzags back and forth and there are many instances of repetition. The description of developments in the case often pauses dead in the water for many pages to allow the author to digress on ancillary matters. A good editor could have cut this by one-third. Putting the name of Thurgood Marshall in the title of the book was a good marketing move, but in truth Marshall was not the trial attorney, nor the initial appeal lawyer. Franklin Williams, a rival of Marshall within the NAACP, was the courageous trial lawyer and handled the initial appeal; Marshall treated Williams pretty poorly throughout the progress of the case. Other heroes of the story are Norman Bunin, a reporter with the St. Petersburg Times who uncovered key evidence for the defense after the initial trial, and Harry T. Moore, slain Florida NAACP leader. I understand that there is a book by Gary Corsair that tells this story more straightforwardly, but I have not read it.

This book moved me in a way that only a few books have done. I read this book as a group read with one of my GR groups, and I’m glad I did, as it forced me to read at a slower pace, so that I could process and discuss the emotions that were stirred within me as I read about this tragic tale about the miscarriage of justice in a rape case where the accused were young black men and the alleged victim a white woman in the Jim Crow South. The author did an amazing job of explaining all the factors at play, both social and economic, within both the black and white communities, as well as in the North and South. He also pulls back the curtain on the legend of Thurgood Marshall, “Mr. Civil Rights”, and allows the reader a more intimate view of Thurgood Marshall the man. I highly recommend this book to anyone who believes in the basic tenants of our Constitution that all men are deserving of basic civil rights. The events covered in this book serve as a reminder of the dark consequences of denying anyone those basic rights, but also renews hope in the American ideal that it only takes the resolve and tenacity of one man (or woman) with a clear vision and focus to create change in even the most dire of circumstances.
