Way overly complicated. Assumes you are building a custom vehicle from scratch. Assumes you want to know precisely the weight, volume, surface area, fuel expenditure, drag, speed, deceleration, stall speed, takeoff distance, distance required to land, and cost of the vehicle you want. Get out that calculator (a few water craft rules require cube roots) and get ready for what seems to be 60 charts and 138 pages (of the total 208 pages) to arrive at the final vehicle. The only templates are sample vehicles located in the the 4 pages that compose Chapter 11. The remaining 66 pages covers the vehicle usage where chapter 12 concerns movement, chapter 13 covers targeting, and chapter 14 deals with combat.A complete contrast to way to design things would be Uncle Albert's Catalog for Car Wars where you look at pictures in the catalog and pick what you are adding to your car.

A fabulous system for people who love the nitty gritty of vehicles and customization as it contains endless chapters on every single nut, bolt and weld of a vehicle from past, present to future. This is by far the worst GURPS book I've ever seen. The most obvious problem is that the book isn't just poorly organized- it's not organized at all. It begins with what I initially assumed was an overview and introduction to the (rather complex) design process, making occasional references to formulae but describing most steps in only general terms. Well, it turns out that this is the *only* place that the entire process is documented, and (despite leaving many complex steps completely undefined, without even a chapter reference) it is the only place in the book that some important formulae appear (if you missed the paragraph on access spaces, you'll never read another word about the fact that all your numbers are now off by a factor of two or more). If you want to design a vehicle, the only way to get it right is to read the entire book from cover to cover and hope you remember it all.Even more fundamental than the book's lack of organization is the utter ludicrousy of the design process itself. The "simple step-by-step process" is set up in about the most awkward way imaginable: first pick everything you want in the vehicle, then decide what kind of body you want the vehicle to have, then add more components, then determine structural characteristics, then layer on armor, then compute statistics. This system is completely backwards for players who wish to design vehicles for a particular purpose. i.e. Suppose you want to build a plane which can travel at mach 2. The first thing you have to do is decide how powerful an engine you want. How on earth are you supposed to know that *first*? Working backwards through the dozens of equations from drag to surface area to volume (which of course is largely determined by engine size itself) is nearly impossible; any attempt at building a vehicle with even vague performance parameters will take several attempts and some very good guesswork.Most disappointing of all, however, is the fact that even with the ridiculous detail and complexity required to build a vehicle, the performance characteristics are computed using absurd and arbitrary rules with no relation to reality, leading one to wonder what the point of all that trouble really was. Multihull sailboats are defined as being much heavier and having much less usable space per volume than monohulls (opposite of reality), aeordynamics have no affect at all on the handling of high speed cars or fuel efficiency, and little effect on speed (a cardboard box with a hefty engine can outperform a formula one car), a plane's vertical speed is completely independent of its weight (if it can fly at all it can climb as steeply as you like), and jet engines take twice as much space if installed in an aircraft's body as if they were installed in wing-mounted pods (again that sneaky access space rule). There is no uniformity between any two rules and everything is a special case; one wonders if this can actually be termed a "system" at all, or if it's really just a collection of ad hoc solutions to one-time problems. Any GM who wants to use this book will have to make so many changes just to make it playable that he might as well design his own rules; this ruleset's only links to reality are the area=volume^(2/3), top speed=(thrust/surface area)^1/2 formulae available from any physics book.The only section of the book which seems at all useful is the 3-page note on advanced maneuvering for vehicles (which of course relies on just a single simple statistic almost entirely independent of the painstakingly complex design of the vehicle); this might be appropriate for a magazine article but is hardly the basis for a sourcebook.All in all, any gaming group is much better off agreeing on their own vehicle rules than wasting time trying to understand and then repair this brain-damaged system.

I love complex, realistic systems. I wouldn't dare use this book in a real rpg campaign unless the vehicle had a role as important as the mellenium falcon in star wars or the enterprise in star trek. But for that key vehicle or starship (when used with GURPs Space), this books rocks. It gives you as much as realism as possible with the physics stuff washed down to 7th-9th grade math level (Full arithmitic with exponents, simple geometry, basic algebraic equations)

This is more of a GM style book there are several factors in this that the average player character would not understand or be able to use properly, having your charicter drive a car player, gm rolling to see if the car survives the player driving it plus. People seem to care about if it is fast or pretty. but actual design of a vehicle require a bit of planning. If you buy this buuk you will need to take plenty of notes while you are designing it will make it easieer to use, and if you are like me a calculator to check your math. And You thought that you would never use algebra.Carl

Most roleplayers fall into one of two categories: The ones that prefer the dynamics of the game (whether the action, the roleplaying or the puzzlesolving) and the tinkerers that spend hours reading and contemplating RPG modules in the way some sane people read prose.This module is not for the roleplayers of the first category. Building your first vehicles takes a looong time. But after a while you realize that these incredibly well-thought through rules are to a very high degree compatible with other GURPS rules such as those found in Ultra-tech and Robots, and you realize you can actually build that piece of equipment you need for the next scenario (whether you're a GM or player) with a minimum of fuzz.If you like this kind of RPG engineering, this is probably the module for you. Guaranteed hours of fun and entertainment.

This installment in the Harmony series by Philip Gulley, like all the others, gives serious insight into the hearts of men. I have to admit, I was sorta hoping that Dale Hinshaw's transplanted heart would turn out to be from a sweet little old lady which might soften his barnacled outlook on life. It turned out okay. And many hearts were changed, even pastor Sam's, who was work worn and about to grow weary in well doing. I look forward to the next Harmony installment, which is waiting for me on my Kindle app.

I have read this book before when it first came out in hardback, but decided to read again on Kindle. Phil Gulley has a way with a phrase and there is always a good lesson to be had hidden among the funny stories. Written from Midwestern values and incorporating small town life from a Quaker perspective, who would not like the homespun and quirky appeal of a well told story? Always a pleasure to visit again or maybe even for the first time.

Book was quick and easy to read. Good story line but predictable ending. All of the characters had their quirks and we all know people just like them so very easy to relate. I would recommend it to most people.

Love every one of the Harmony books and this one lived up to the wonderful series. The characters and emotions are realistic. The pastor is frustrated and loving toward his unique congregation. Each book is full of heart and grace.

I purchased these books based on the fact that they were described as light hearted but spiritually based. The writing is excellent...the author is witty and dry and quite funny...but belittles Baptists more than any other denomination, and is quite humanistic. If you are just looking for a light hearted work of fiction this is fine. But if you have doctrinal beliefs, it can get to the point that it becomes frustrating...as it did with me.

I loved all of the "Harmony" books. Many times I found myself laughing out loud, and to be able to do that while suffering the pain of a broken hip meant a thoroughly entertaining read.

The whole Harmony series is very enjoyable, and it among my favorite in the fiction genre. They are all light-hearted and full of wonderful and entertaining characters. The books follow Sam, a pastor in a small-town Quaker church, and the eclectic group of individuals who are members.That being said, this was my least favorite of the series. I fear Gulley is runnung low on humor! This one was very pleasent and feel-good, but was not quite as funny as the previous ones. Also, one of the things I love about these books are the touching one or two-liners he usually ends the chapters with. They just warm your heart! But this book didn't have those.Either way, these books are easy, pleasant and clean reads. Enjoy!

These book by Phillip Gulley are so down to earth - I find myself wondering "how does a minister put up with all the different folks in their congregation" - I find myself comparing the folks with people I know (and maybe sometimes myself) I have all his books now - I usually give my books away but I will keep this set - I read some of the books years ago, now, I want to keep these they never go out of style - He is a wonderful writer.

I have no idea how other reviewers said the instructions were 'simple and easy to follow'. Just reading the first recipe proved otherwise. The instructions, immediately following a list of ingredients, said 'turn down the heat and cook'. Turn down the heat from what? It doesn't say. The mystery deepens... It then instructs us to simmer 25 minutes. Simmer what? We still don't know what we're cooking or simmering. Then it says 'add the other ingredients' . The chickpea tagine does not list ANY chickpeas in the ingredients but instead lists couscous....You get the idea... You have to be pretty intuitive to figure out what she's instructing you to do. I thought perhaps it was just this one recipe, but alas many others are just as vague. I suppose if you already are familiar with tagine cooking this book might be more helpful, but as for me I think i now have to buy another book.

I have already tried two of the recipes, they tasted just as good as the originals I had at a riad in Fez.If you are looking for the gold standard on preparing Moroccan cuisine, look no further, you've found it.An excellent selection of sixteen delicious recipes, each recipe includes ingredients, technique and easy to follow step-by-step instructions, along with gorgeous photos to whet your appetite.Yummily recommended!

Never knew that Moroccan dishes are simple yet unique. I didn’t know of tagine and much of Moroccan recipes until I read this book. It's great that the ingredients provided are easy to get at the local store. I love that the steps are easy to follow, even for an amateur cook like me. Some recipes are accompanied with a brief mouthwatering introduction.Yummy! Reading this book makes me hungry!

Engrossing book. Non-fiction that reads like a good novel. Sakamoto captures the sense of loss and righteous confusion felt by the Fukuharas over their situation. The reader can empathize with all members of the family and feel their pain and yet be in awe of their firmly-held belief that things will be OK and that they can endure their suffering in the present because there is light at the end of the tunnel. One of the best books (fiction or non-fiction) I have read in a long time!

Harry Fukuhara was born in Seattle, Washington in 1921 and through unlikely twists of fate ended up a priceless interpreter/translator for the MIS (Military Intelligence Service) during WWII. The saga of his family is told with meticulous research and detail by Pamela Rotner Sakamoto.Against his will, Harry was taken by his mother to Japan with his siblings after his father died. After securing a promise that he could return if he graduated from high school there, he applied himself and finally did return, but to an America that was not welcoming to him in 1938. The sojourn in Japan, however, had secured him a solid education in that arcane language and a deep understanding of the vocabulary of war because his high school had been militarized. This was to prove invaluable when he volunteered for the Army.Each member of his family went through his/her own struggle to survive, some of them living through the horrors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Aside from Harry's own incredible story, I was surprised to learn so much about the life and times of Nisei (second gen Japanese-Americans) in Japan as well as on the West Coast. Even those who are familiar with the incarceration of Japanese-Americans in the camps following America's declaration of war may find much of this story new to them. I didn't realize that for Nisei who happened to be in Japan pre-war, life was difficult as they were looked upon with hostility which got even worse once war started. The same applied on the West Coast where they were subject to discrimination before the war, too.At times, I found that Sakamoto's efforts at accuracy seemed to make the flow of the story a bit rough, such as the extensive use of direct quotations to express the feelings and actions of people. Nevertheless, this is one heck of a story and worth reading more than once. I recommend it! After reading my Kindle copy, I decided to buy the hard copy and was surprised to find that it contains many photographs none of which is on the Kindle version.

I have read with interest many books about WW2 and my interest increased when my husband started working a job that took us to Japan for 6 months out of the year for the last 8 years. Imagine my delight to discover a book that tells the story of the Pacific Theater from the perspective of both sides of the war from one family that were divided and fighting on two different sides. I am an avid reader, but I was completely taken back when I discovered that this book was hands down one of the best books I have ever read. It was well written and told the story of this amazing family beautifully. I was moved and inspired. I have never read a book that I just had to get on Facebook and recommend it to everyone. A beautifully well written masterpiece!!!

Anat Geva is a registered architect and a Professor of Architecture at Texas A&M University, where she teaches design, sacred architecture, history of building technology, and preservation. She has a long list of publications including a book, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Sacred Architecture: Faith, Form, and Building Technology, published in 2012. She co-founded and co-edited the journal of the National Council of Preservation Education, Preservation Education & Research (PER), and was a co-editor of ARRIS (SESAH’s Journal). She was one of the founders of the Forum on Architecture, Culture, and Spirituality (ACS) and served as a member on their executive committee. She is the past president of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH), and past secretary of the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE).

The book was an eye opener. Fortunately, most of the safety flaws mentioned in the book were addressed by Volkswagen by the time my 1974 Super Beetle was made.

First Read this book in middleschool while trying to find a car to drive. Did wind up getting a bug and yes, blew off the road. Just wanted to re-read it since I am now (25 years later) looking for another bug.

A very interestiong book on the history of the beetle in the USA. And of the safety hazards of this small car...

If you've ever tired of all of the wannabe, pseudo intellectuals going on about how great the original VW Bug was, this is your book. I'm not the biggest Ralph Nader fan, but he hit a home run with this book. Nader is better known for his other book that torpedoed the Corvair, "Unsafe at any speed". That's because VWoA had the advertising muscle it took to keep this book quiet. If you don't think the VW bug was junk, read this book. This should shut up all of the burnouts who long for the "good old days", when they could work on their own cars. And if you love VW bugs, but are really a masochist, read this book as a form of self flagellation.

(I've red this book very long ago, and since I've red also other books by Ralph Nader on this topic, I'm not sure if the part on the Ford Pinto is in this one)Ralph Nader has obviously been payed by Ford Motor Co.!!!!His critics of the Ford Pinto (alibi-car!), was only a maneuver dictated by Ford, for turning away suspicions from the one who started the secret war against all rear-motored cars!The fact is, that rear-motored (oversteering) cars are at least five times safer than the front-engined (understeering) ones! And the (original!) VW-beetle is the safest car on Earth!!Why have almost all rear-motored cars vanished, if much safer than the front-engined counterparts? The cars producers have found out, through secret statistics, that the more accidents there are, the more cars they sell!!!! And if someone is injured or dies because of their deadly traps, "well", -tough luck-!!!!!!!!Do you remember what Preston Tucker said about the maker of the front-engined cars?........ Well it's actually -worse-!!!!!!!!(Now you know!)Renato G.F. Naso

This is a very persuasive book in which Mr. Nader is trying to get you to take every single aircooled Volkswagen off of the road forever. There are solid facts about old Volkswagen's safety shortcomings. However, some of these appear to be missing exact facts(which worked in favor of Mr. Nader) The handling characteristics seem a bit exaggerated to me. I love how he goes on and on for pages about a defective gas cap. I think it is worthwhile for an aircooled Volkswagen owner to read this. I would advise, however, to take it with a grain of salt. As I think it is one-sided in many places and maybe some factors are not explained.Plus how can a man hate cars so much yet never have been behind the wheel of one? :)

This is the book that did for the Volkswagen what "Unsafe At Any Speed" did for the Corvair. Ralph Nader had a significant role in the creation of this book, although he is not given author credit. It is a tell-all on the safety problems inherent in the design and engineering of the VW Beetle and Transporter. It is not good news for the VW enthusiast, which I am one, but it has caused me to drive it much more safely and carefully.
