The Late MURRAY R. SPIEGEl received the M.S degree in Physics and the Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. Beautifully laid out book. Josh takes you on a detailed tour of not only his successful small farm, Slow Hand Farm, but also 14 other small (less than 5 acres) farms. Many of the farms he profiles are run by the grandfathers/grandmothers of this industry: Eliot Coleman, Alex Peregrine, Jean-Martin Fortier, to name a few. The others are all run by farmers that may be nationally less-known, but are still pillars within their own farming communities. Josh effectively breaks down each farm in a manner that is easy to digest. He starts with the basic history of each farm, their hopes/needs/wants/desires from their farms and how they have changed or altered themselves in order to reach those goals. He then walks us through everything from basic tools on the farm, to bed prep, all the way through post-harvest washing and packing, and into the nuts and bolts of office organization.The best thing about this book is the diversity of farmers, their locations, and the ways they tackle their own farming ventures. Josh states at the beginning of the book that being exposed to a range and diversity of growing, harvesting, and packing methods will best inform a potential farm or farmer on how to grow their operation. He is right. I've never read such a book that details the intricate systems of so many different farms, all in one place. Even when meeting other farmers at annual conferences does not provide this kind of detail. Going over these various systems and strategies each farm uses would take way too long to explain, even when meeting these folks in person or actually visiting their farms. Having all of this information collected, stored, and ready-to-use in this book is an invaluable tool for any farmer seeking knowledge in how to improve their operation.It is my opinion that established farms will benefit greatly from this book, as seeing how other highly successful small farms operate (15 of them), is key to picking and choosing the most successful methods for YOUR farm. I also believe that new and starting farmers will benefit as well, but it may take a season or two of growing before all of the principles in this book, and how you may fit them into your own personal farm framework, begin to make complete sense. Like Josh says, there is absolutely no substitute for hands-on learning in the farming world. Get out there and do it, and make sure you have this book in your back pocket to reference. You will find it is worth it's weight in gold.

13 of the 15 micro-farms are all centered around annual veggies, usually micro-greens. There is still solid how-to information here for the fruit farmer and the perennial plant crowd.

This is definitely a great coffee table book or for a great read. The book is informative on how the farms are laid out, operational principles and so forth. But as a primer for how to get you going not so much. That is fine because that it seems was not the intent of the book. It just shows how other people made their particular space and goals work for them.Now if you are looking to start a mini farm it is very informational not instructive. I have to say it showed me some things I would never have thought of or would have hit on eventually.So in my opinion if you are interested in a mini farm to buy or build this is the book for you. Or if you simply like to see how others did their version of crazy.( a nod to all farmers who are told "You want to farm?! Are you Crazy?!) Also if you like to read about farms this is the book for you. The pictures and illustrations of each farm alone make the book worth the purchase price.

What a great resource, I have a small farm and the ideas in here are so inspiring, I pick it up many times to reread for an idea and to see how the other small farmers did it.Excellent job by Josh putting this book together. There's something inhere for every farm or garden.Highly recommended.

Old and new ideas from current farmers who are trying to produce on small acreage. These are not blueprints but more guidelines as to starting and running small farms/market gardens. There are many better books of this type with more information i.e. Elliot Coleman's. Still, this is the book for the curious who are interested in investigating possible small scale farming options.

If you do any freelance writing at all, or if you've just wondered what newspaper style is when you want to send newspapers a press release, then The Associated Press Stylebook gives you over 500 pages of information on AP style--which is what newspapers go by when they publish. This reference book covers everything, in A-Z fashion, including numerical style, abbreviations, punctuation, capitalization, and more. It even tells you how to reference religions and churches, sports reports, fashion and foods. A quick briefing on media law is also included and very helpful. As a journalist who used to sort through press releases to decide which ones to use, I also know that this book could be immensely useful to clubs and social organizations--as well as public institutions such as colleges and schools-- because the closer your press release style is to AP style, the more likely that it will be used. I purchased this book at full price to do editing in my current job.

I have to take off one star simply because this is AP, which is the mortal enemy of CMS, but since we use journalism writing rules at work, I needed this book in order to avoid my darling Oxford comma and adhere to news guidelines for writing.I'm actually pretty thrilled that this was available for Kindle. As much as I prefer hard copies for reference books, it's super handy to be able to pull this one up on my Kindle at work any time I need it. The formatting is great, and it's easy to find exactly what I need to know when I'm editing our newsletters and other publications.If you're reporting news in print or online, I have to recommend this book. AP rules have been a standard for the news industry for as long as I've been alive, and while I may disagree with some of the standard rules they've changed, I can understand the reasoning. AP style lends itself to clear, concise writing that's necessary for anything journalism-related, and having it at your fingertips on Kindle makes looking up the rules wonderfully easy.

This remains an excellent reference on syntax and usage. It is nice to have a paper copy to touch and reference.

Thank you to reviewers who revealed issues with the most recent edition. I bought an older edition and it is great. It is more extensive than my 2007 edition, but it has good paper and doesn't have the problems that reviewers had with the newest version. I trust their reviews because I have noticed how some publishers are trying to combat cost inflation without raising prices too much, smaller print and cheaper paper.

The reporters' bible. The Kindle online reader is a very convenient way to access this first-ever e-book version of the Stylebook (no more lousy app that needs wholesale replacement regularly). Highly recommended.

I bought the e-book version and loved it! Although it was a struggle locating the book (2015 edition), I guess because it is the 2015 edition. However, I will say that I did go to the AP Stylebook website to purchase the newest edition which is 2016. I needed that edition for another Journalism course I am taking at the university. Overall, I didn't see much difference, but I enjoyed reading them both even though I haven't completed the readings,

Some of the answers are wrong!!, so don't rely solely on the answer key for grading. Concepts are described clearly, though dryly (not particularly engaging). Worked fine for an introduction to geometry for my 7th graders, reinforces algebra and problem-solving skills.

This is an excellent adjunct to the classroom book, providing explanations and examples that help clear up misunderstandings in my students. I used it with an honors level geometry student who had some difficulties, especially with proofs, and it helped her quite a lot. Her grade improved, and she was delighted. I liked that the information was well organized, the examples were thorough, and all problem answers were in the back.

I purchased this after my daughter started seeing a tutor for geometry. Normally a straight A student, she was really struggling with geometry. The title suggested getting a book, as her class doesn't use one. It's been very helpful, and should still be helpful when she's taking college courses. It's straight forward, glad we went with this book.

A great resource to get examples from as a teacher! It is also a good review book for students. I don't think this would work well as the sole method to learn Geometry. Khan Academy is better for that, but if you have or are taking a Geometry course this is a great support resource!

Love the layout of these books. Only docking a couple points because there are no solutions to the practice problems--just answers.

I always like Barron's work books. So informative and good practice problems. It was for my 8th grade child's self-study at home. Working perfectly.

Bought a bunch of these to review for an exam to become a math teacher. Very helpful.

I used this book to brush up on my Geometry, and boy, did it put me to work. What I liked about the book are the explanations of Geometric ideas, theorems, particularly the proofs. But this book will put you to work with all the problems that it has in it. Some sections are easier to finish than others, but once you get to the proofs, they'll take some time to complete.Overall, this book almost works like a text-book given the volume of material and explanations and practice problems. I highly recommend this book.

This is a collection of 10 trading classes in one book. Each teaches a different strategy with a different focus. If for some reason you are not in love with a strategy, just skip to the next section. There will be a completely different angle & different teacher. Subjects include testing your strategies so this is a book you will refer to again & again, even as you grow & are later interested in other books & schemes.The book is based on live interviews with helpful trading mentors from across the globe. They speak clearly & openly which I find refreshing. Pay attention. These trading teachers all have huge social media followings, so they are well prepared to talk about their methods & how you can apply them. If you haven't heard of these Trading Mentors, you've just been tuned into different circles.I'm assuming that the current book price is a super discount to kick off this new book - because after thumbing through an advance review copy I felt this was such a value that I should show support & buy it, which is when I discovered the price is far far lower than expected. At this price it is crazy not to buy it.No matter if you are new or you have been in the market for 10 years, you will find specific value here. As if that wasn't enough, you can also get streaming access to the original video interviews that the book came from.

It is a wonderful effort by Phillip to interview people across the globe. Each of the people interviewed is well established in their fields. To find these gems and then ask them these leading questions which will help generation of traders to come is a stupendous task. The structure of the book is also amazing, moving from purely discretionary traders to all the way up-to automated executors it covers a lot and ensures that there is something for everyone. I also notice most of these traders are absolutely honest in their opinions and views. Eg: Louise Bedford explaining her journey and the candlestick patterns that she invented, or Rayner Teo explaining his various strategies and the methods he uses to assess his performance, or some of the traders accepting that they don't short as they are not comfortable with it tells me how honest they have been throughout the interviews, but the biggest take away for me was where Nishant Arora mentions "In the financial markets, there is no beginning and there is no ending. It begins when you put on a trade, it ends when you exit that trade. So everything starts and stops at you." This is one of the must read books in this genre. Be it a novice trying to figure out survival in this wild world of markets or a professional who has survived so far and not yet able to fully achieve his potential, everyone will find a lot of things useful to make his journey easier. This book is one which i will treasure for a very long time.

A compelling book and a terrifying one. And a must read for anyone who's worried about what they're eating. And anyone who's ever wondered how come chicken and eggs are so cheap nowadays at the supermarket. Back in 16th century France, King Henry IV when he acceded the throne found a country devastated by war and launched what was probably History's first campaign to fight poverty and stimulate economic growth. He famously used the slogan "a chicken in every Sunday pot" - meaning that a chicken, then a luxury, should be the one meal of choice for every French family at least once a week. Now, four centuries later, we have chicken every day, we have eggs galore every morning.But what kind of chicken is it, what kind of meat? The author does a superb investigative job to answer that question, talking to everyone at Tyson Foods (one of the biggest corporation controling the meat market, from egg to frozen food) and digging into its history. All that makes for a captivating account. What contract farming means for the farmers working for Tyson Foods is revealed in all its hair-raising details.A pity the book doesn't go as far as I would have liked - but I shouldn't complain, after all, as its title implies, it stops at "the meat racket". Still, I would have liked to see more about what it means for consumers, I am especially worried about all the chemicals and genetic manipulations that go into modern meat production and what they do to us humans - could the current ghastly wave of obesity that has overwhelmed America and is now reaching Europe be ascribed to them? I fear so but of course I don't have the proof and this is not a book that will throw light on that aspect.Nevertheless, as far as it goes, this is an excellent book and it should be read. Your next fried egg will never look the same to you again! And maybe one of these days, in a follow-up book, Christopher Leonard will apply his remarkable investigative talents to uncover what modern agriculture does to human health. I am looking forward to it. Meanwhile, read this book, highly recommended.

I am a poultry farmer and I appreciate Mr. Leonard's shedding light on the way the industry operates. In the last seven years I have seen expenses increase with no increase in the amount I am paid per pound of chicken and in fact have seen my income fall due to production cuts, yet I have seen the large poultry companies report record profits.

I can't yet comment on this particular translation as I read the book in German. But I think it is one of those books that needed and deserved a translation, and so for that alone I recommend it. It is in my view the most important work of critical theory since Adorno. The gloss here does not really do it justice. It is not so much a work of moral philosophy in the sense suggested. It is more in the tradition of Marx and perhaps even more Hegel. It lays out a new idea of how to critique social forms from within, in terms of how well they solve problems and advance human life. In any event, I think it deserves the kind of attention that Americans have lavished on Habermas of Derrida, perhaps even more than those do.

When I was a kid, I read Ray Bradbury's time travel short, "A Sound of Thunder," in which wealthy adventurers travel back in time to hunt animals such as dinosaurs. Cause and effect kick in when a hunter does something unexpected, and the change ripples through time, catching up with the hunters when they return to the present."Permafrost" is an elaborated version of that concept (though it's still only a novella, not a full length book), which sees a rag-tag team of scientists situated in our future work to reach back in time and avert a disaster that is in their past...or is that the future, it depends on where you sit in the timeline. I liked the grittiness of the environment which is set in Russia, and the stoic perseverance of the cast, who never waver even as they fight against time-induced paradoxes and their hijacked protagonists to achieve their goal.The mechanism of time travel is based on 'Luba Pairs', invented quantum effects that are the brainchild of the mother of the protagonist, math teacher Valentina Lidova. Unlike most leading-ladies in a thriller, Valentina is 71 years old and partially lame. She was included in the secret project because of her mother, though it was not well explained why her presence over any other would make a difference. Whatever, Luba Pairs allow people to link back mentally to suitably prepared people, which was another aspect of the novel that was a little sketchy. Note that while there is discussion of the science of time travel, Reynolds never gets beyond hand-waving explanations of science or tech in any of his novels, so you don't need a degree in quantum mechanics to read this.This is mostly straightforward reading, though, later in the novel when the nature of the threat becomes apparent and I started wondering just how far up and down the timeline events can be influenced the underlying weirdness of time travel kicked in a little bit. I do not think the actual intent of the story is obvious, but (perhaps) having divined it, I forgave Reynolds the tease of a novella when he could have been writing another 'Revelation Space' saga!Still, this is no "'—All You Zombies—'" and it will not spark a brilliant movie based on it such as "Predestination." Heinlein's classic short twists time travel in such a way that it hurts to even contemplate the situation. The time travel here is a less edgy version. It is more a prop to the action, not truly the trigger for the action itself, which seems a strange thing to say, but that's because Reynolds could have told the story of a small team brought together by circumstance and pushed to their limits - and beyond - in any number of ways. I never felt like the time travel aspect was critical to the telling of the story, and I guess the takeaway for me is that once again I felt that Reynolds was coasting in the writing. He is good, and this is a neat little book that I enjoyed reading, but it lacks some spark of creative tension required to get that final emotional nudge for a 5-star finish.

Permafrost is a 2019 novella by acclaimed science fiction author Alastair Reynolds. It is not connected with any of his other books.In the year 2080, humanity is on the brink of extinction due to a global catastrophe known as "The Scouring." Scientists have found a way to go back in time and believe they might be able to fix the problem and thus assure the future survival of mankind. I can't say much more about the story without spoiling it, but the plot is classic Reynolds; it contains big ideas and extreme science but never loses its human factor.Permafrost is well-written, with good characterization. At the beginning, Reynolds is rather mum about all that has happened on planet earth and how exactly the time travel works, but reveals bit by bit as the book progresses, and it really helps keep you into the story until the very end. I particularly enjoyed having to use my brain and trying to wrap my head around some of the ideas the author presents. Reynolds proffers some very interesting ideas about time travel and artificial intelligence, ideas that will get you thinking. I also much enjoyed the main character in the story, who is quite the unlikley heroine; her interactions with her "host" are great. Depsite the book's short length, characterization is handled deftly, with just enough to make the characters compelling.Permafrost is an excellent example of why I have stuck with Alastair Reynolds over the years. The novella presents bold ideas and takes some worn-out concepts and gives them new life. Give Permafrost a shot. I guarantee you'll enjoy this notable addition to the grand tradition of time-traveling storytelling.

This novella was an awkward length for the story it was telling. If it had been a short story, there would have been fewer plot elements. If had been a novel, they could have been fleshed out. What there is feels unfinished.The actual mission doesn't affect the book much. There has been an ecological collapse, and if they can just arrange for some seeds in the past to be preserved, the human race may be saved. It would have been much the same book if they had been trying to preserve water from Lourdes in order to defeat a demonic incursion.The time-travel paradigm is cute - I think the author had fun with the idea of 'grandfathering' - but it could have been a thousand other science-fictional paradigms without affecting the book much. The plot device that actually matters in this regard is the use of nanotechnology to take over other people, and there is no attempt to even hand-wave that.The core of the novella is very good. The characters are trying to save the world. What they do matters and they rise to the occasion. The rest of the novella could have benefited from being longer. or shorter.
