This book is one seasoned developer's guided tour of UML. After giving a bit of background on UML's genesis, Fowler outlines the sort of development process that UML was designed to support. Unlike most such discussions, this one is both readable and level headed; Fowler clearly has a lot of experience with real-world projects, and considers "doability" much more important than ideology. In each chapter, Fowler describes a single aspect of UML, such as its activity diagrams or case notation, and shows how it should be used and how it fits into the overall development process. The examples are easy to follow, the diagrams are clear, and the author's enjoyment of his work comes through again and again.

Fowler (with contributions by Scott) gives quick and concise instructions on using the UML replete with example diagrams and example code. His style is wonderfully engaging and easy to approach. I found myself able to draw use cases, classes, activity diagrams, and more in almost no time.Fowler sized the book on the small side (under 200 pages), yet gives a complete if sometimes merely cursory introduction to all of the components of the UML. After digesting its contents, I found myself wanting more details, particularly on a process to go with the UML diagramming. Despite the small size, Fowler finds space to include mention on related OOA&D issues, such as CRC cards, design patterns, and design-by-contract.The book suffers from one drawback, which is more than likely not the fault of its authors: the typesetting is terrible. Sudden font changes in the figures and in the text, the use of prime symbols interchangeably with apostrophes (sometimes in the same paragraph), overlapping lines in figures, and a chapter introduction element (two lines that aren't quite the same length) are examples of some of the problems.Luckily, it's easy to overlook the poor typesetting and focus on the substantive information that Fowler presents, which is of superior quality.

This book is useful for what it really is: an introduction to the graphical language of UML. It does not really teach one much about modelling, or about methodologies for OOAD. So it poses a strange problem: it is a beginner's book, but unsuitable for total beginners. It is best read by people who already have an understanding of the OOAD process- others may end up rather confused.For those who are new to UML but not OO, it is a very useful introduction to the notation. I find myself constantly looking things up, and it is pretty complete. Reminds me of the "in a nutshell" books, but more readable.I like Fowler's style and if I were to complain, I would say that it needs some more down-to-earth techniques (e.g. how would you model a login, or a client-server with sockets, etc.) which would put the notation into a more useful context.

This book is a great primer on OO development. The writing style in books I have read by Boochand others tends to be so detailed that the overall picture is lost. Fowler does a good job of providing context for his examples. He also never claims the book is an exhaustive reference so the reader is never deceived. He is also one of the few authors who thankfully separates the modelling language from the process. He provides suggestions as for what diagrams to use with each stage of the process as opposed to the dogmatic approach taken by most authors in this field of expertise. Finally, the bibliography is one of the most useful I have seen since the text of the book provides the strengths and weaknesses of the entries.

"UML Distilled" is an excellent introduction to UML, and a good refresher on the visual aspects of analysis and design. Fowler and Scott cram a lot of useful information and practical advice (e.g., when to bend the rules) into a small space--something which harried professionals will appreciate.

Martin Fowler is telling us on how he sees the development process with UML. The book is basically written like a young man's diary of his intercation with UML. There are many places that Martin is telling us that he would not prefer to do that, nor give us a good explanation of why he prefers the other method. I felt like a student in an empty library when reading the book.I am a project manager with some OO experience, in UML, and after some reading and courses in UML, Martin should have known that a better name for his book is: "A UML diary by Martin Fowler"

Short and to the point. A good working guide if you know OO programming. Examples are clear but not too detailed. If you are into the high ceremony, fill out every form, type of design documentation this book won't be detailed enough for you. If you are a working programmer who wants good ways to think about and communicate your software designs - this is the book for you.In our company we give it to all programmers we hire as an introduction to the design documentation techniques used within the company.

Almost two years ago, I bought Venuto's e-book _Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle_ (BFFM), and used it to lose 16 pounds of body fat, moving from a size 6 to a size 0. The principles in that book helped me tune in to my eating requirements and nutritional needs, and taught me how to track my progress on a weekly basis. I've kept the weight off, and have continued to use that book to make occasional tweaks to my eating to maintain the weight loss and put on more muscle.This book follows the same approach of BFFM, but it is designed more for the average reader who is looking to lose weight and get in shape, and who may be new to weight training and proper nutrition. It focuses on healthy lifestyle approaches; there are no gimmicks or quick fixes here, just Venuto's five key principles: setting goals, monitoring food intake, doing cardio at least three days a week, doing weight-training (specifically, full-body compound movements, since they burn more fat, with a few isolation exercises like biceps curls thrown into the mix) three days a week, and seeking support from family and friends. Yes, losing body fat is a slow process, but Venuto explains why doing it slowly and properly is the way to maintain weight loss long-term.One of the things that sets Venuto's book apart from others is that he focuses a lot on goal-setting and the emotional and mental hurdles that hold us back from reaching those goals. The entire first part of this book (about 88) pages is devoted to this topic, and it is very helpful information. I find myself re-reading the goal-setting portions of BFFM on a semi-regular basis, and I know I will be doing the same with the information in this book, too.I was worried that this book would repeat much of the same information from BFFM, and, while there are similarities, this book is still different enough to merit purchase, even if you already have BFFM, if you are looking for a more general approach and/or a "refresher course." Much of the information is similar in both books, but in this book Venuto keeps his information more general. For example, in BFFM, he has you very specifically track your macronutrient rations (of carbs, proteins, and fats), whereas in this book he emphasizes in a more general way that you should minimize starchy/processed carbs like breads and cerals in favor of lean protein and green, fibrous carbs/vegetables.If you already have BFFM, then you probably don't *need* this book, but, if you're like me and enjoy reading fitness and nutrition books, this will be a nice addition to your library. Venuto is very motivational, and he really knows his stuff!

First things first -- I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Tom Venuto's "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" eBook. In fact, I was probably one of the original purchasers. I believe that it is the only complete approach to diet and exercise ever published, and that other fitness books are only pale approximations.The down side of the BtF/FtM eBook is that it's very detailed. Implementation takes study, patience and a calculator. In diet terms, it's a full meal. The challenge for the present book was to present the same information in more digestible form.Unfortunately, "The Body Fat Solution" is not completely successful. Although I appreciate Mr. Venuto's desire to teach "mental strategies before physical dynamics", I don't think a fitness book needs to start with 108 pages of motivation. Anyone who buys the book is suitably motivated. Ultimately, staying motivated will be the challenge, but in the beginning new readers just want to know what the program consists of and how to get started.It also shouldn't take 253 pages to get to what you should do on the first day. So as a public service, I'm going rectify this shortcoming by giving you the Quick Start Guide the book should have opened with.Here's what you do. First, buy an accurate scale, a measuring tape and a set of inexpensive fat calipers. Measure your weight, waist circumference and body fat, and write them down. Second, remove all the sugars, simple starches and grains from your diet. Increase your intake of lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and stop trying to avoid fat. Third, start exercising every day. If you can't think of anything else, start walking. Finally, take body measurements frequently and adjust your diet and exercise routines accordingly.Got all that? Good. Now, go read the book. Learn all the philosophies, refine the implementation and recapture any lost motivation. Learn why shortcut diets never work for very long. Learn why the all the famous TV diet spokespeople usually gain their weight back. Learn the difference between calorie dense and nutrient dense, and put that knowledge to work. Learn exercise strategies that shorten workout time and increase effectiveness. And, finally, learn dozens of success strategies that will counter the tendency for your previous fitness efforts to fail.Then, read it all again.Mr. Venuto's perspective is that people 1) don't understand the nutrient content of their food, 2) underestimate their caloric intake, 3) overestimate their exercise output, and 4) are forced by life pressures to eat fast and pre-prepared foods. Don't feel bad; even professionals get these wrong. Add a tendency to fall in love with counterproductive fast weight-loss schemes, and you've got the perfect recipe for poor health.The components of Mr. Venuto's program are mental training, cardio training, strength training, nutrition and support. He feels that that without the presence of each component, fitness fails and your health suffers. To implement the diet, you need to be willing and able to cook. It's not complicated, but this is not a fast food diet. To exercise you'll need a set of dumbbells and a bench, or you'll need to find a gym.There's nothing radial here, and there's nothing to argue about. The message is simple -- there are no shortcuts. The secret, if there is one, is to go slowly, build better habits and make fitness a lifetime achievement. This program is a marathon, not a sprint. Mary Beth Williams, PhD, LCSW, CTS, is in private practice in Warrenton, Virginia, specializing in the treatment of trauma-related disorders. She is widely published in the field of trauma and is an instructor for the Office for Victims of Crime at the U.S. Department of Justice. Great read for me. I am still working on it. I suffer with PTSD and I am currently starting EMDR treatment and this book helps with being able to use a combination of reading and therapy. This book is a good read and also helpful for those who are on their journey and need a little bit of help on their own as well at home to help them when they're not in therapy. Overall, a book to help you become and learn to stay strong from what your individual trauma is. The workbook helps you and goes easily into things, in a gentle matter and doesn't rush into things. You work at your own pace and just take your time. No need to rush anything, especially with trauma. Gentle read and gentle approach. Definitely one of the good ones.

I had just gone through the long road of recovery from severe childhood abuse and being on the other side I felt a little wobbly on things like setting healthy boundaries and building self-esteem. This book helped a lot. By following the advice and doing some of the excercises, I learned how to get on my feet and stand solid. The only downfall for this book in my personal case was a lot of it pertained to achieving that healthy life that you had before the trauma. With childhood abuse, for me, there was no reference point to compare too. Despite those sections, the exercises are solid, easy to follow, and work. You must be self motivated and willing to explore traumatic feelings.

I am a therapist that specializes in trauma and have yet (that is until now) been able to find a workbook that supports they theories I use with trauma survivors. Dena Rosenbloom's workbook focuses on safety and processing the trauma is a very safe way as to avoid retraumatizing the client. She has the book set to work from beginning to end so that it organizes the work the client does (clearly stating don't skip ahead). There is much much more.I am thrilled to have found this workbook and am already recommending to trauma survivors. What a blessing!!!

Excellent self-help workbook. It really helped me with my PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). There is a great book to read with same title. I don't write in the book in case a episode occurs with different answers to my emotions. I use with a notebook to write in. Just FYI

Great! I wouldn’t work through this without a therapist. The book sometimes ignores childhood trauma, and often refers to ‘how life was before the trauma.’ Which, doesn’t exist for childhood trauma. That can be frustrating but it’s a generally good tool.

So far what I have gotten through its like the book is speaking about me. the one key point that I am really picking up on is having to focus on learning to relax. I showed the book to my physician and counselor and they both think its a good book for me but this is something that I chose to do on my own. I would recommend this book especially for those who have been through trauma since child hood and especially if history repeats itself like it has in my case.

Book came in excellent condition. I am looking forward to utilizing this book that my therapist recommended. It appears to be very helpful and thought-provoking on many key issues that those of us that have suffered from traumatic events need to focus in on.

Be prepared to really think about your life. This book made me discover things about myself I never knew. I am prepared to work on these things in the future.
